Out of Office Reply

Christine , on February 20, 2017 at 4:49 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 31

I work in an office and use email regularly. I need to make an out of office reply for when I'm gone on my honeymoon. Should I mention that I'm gone for my honeymoon or just that I'm out of the office and when I'll be back?

Just do a run of the mill "out of the office for vacation" autoreply.

This is the second time we've had this question in a week. Just baffles me.

Just have you're out of the office. Why does everyone need to know you're on your HM? What difference would that make in how you conduct your business?

Most professionals just say I am out of office until date of return with no access to email. And then give another persons email/number to contact

I will probably say I'm not n my honeymoon to emails coming from within the company and a general one for clients.

I wouldn't mention it, not everyone needs to know your business. I would just do something simple like below. (I am an administrative assistant so I listed my attorneys names after this)

I will be out of the office starting Friday, December 16th and will be returning Tuesday, December 20th. Please contact the following if you need assistance for:

The only reason to mention it is if you need the extra attention of people asking about it when you get home.

I wouldn't mention it. That seems unprofessional.

Out of the office and a forwarding email or phone number for emergencies.

You really want a stranger to know you are vacation. Personal information such as home addresses are easy to find these days.

The only difference from my standard out of office reply from the one for my honeymoon is that is usually put I will have limited access to email. Here is what I used:

I will be out of the country with no access to email.  I return January 30, 2017. If you have an emergency please contact my legal assistant *insert name here* at *insert email address* or *insert phone number*.

I'm putting this on mine when we go on our honeymoon but I just think it's adorable. Otherwise I wouldn't put too much thought into it

Edit to add- I will have an actual out of office message, I'm just putting the meme at the bottom for recipients in our office, not for outside recipients

I would say out of office and mention that you won't be checking e-mail or phone. Sometimes even on vacation, I'll get emails that sort of need to be replied to if the person thinks I'm checking messages. Be clear that you aren't.

Clients and coworkers don't care why you are out of the office. Life goes on as usual for people. They just need to know why they didn't get an immediate response during normal business hours, when to expect a response and who to contact if they need immediate assistance. That's it.

I added to my out of office auto-reply that I was out for my wedding and honeymoon...but I also work at WeddingWire and knew most emails would be coming from all of you Smiley smile

    I'd stick with a normal OOO auto-reply!

I don't think it would be very professional to mention your honeymoon on an OOO response. That, and nobody cares as much as you do.
