Our Photographer Has Seemingly Ghosted...What now?

Taralaine, on April 19, 2017 at 4:49 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 13

So, my pre-wedding anxiety is in full force right now thanks to our photographer whom we paid our retainer for and half of the wedding photography shoot to last August. He shot our engagement session in November and was incredibly kind and professional, but for all intents and purposes appears to now have vanished from the face of the earth. I emailed him 2 weeks ago asking a quick question in regards to scheduling for the big day and have heard nothing. I followed up with an email yesterday morning and have also left a voicemail- nothing. I did a little investigating and a highly concerning review turned up for him on his WeddingWire page from a bride who had her wedding over 6 months ago and has not received any photographs or any contact from him since. I'm posting to see if anyone has any advice about where to go from here or you know, just some general words of wisdom because my wedding is 107 days away and I'm fully freaking out.

I have no advice but you have my full anxious sympathy for the situation. You have a contract right? I'd start googling the shit out of him and his business to find ways to get ahold of him...

I'm sorry you're going thru this, I'd be freaking out too! Have you tried Googling the photographer's name and phone number, rather than his company name? You may be able to find more info that way.

Are his website and social media pages active? Most photographers that I've seen post pretty regularly, so you should notice if he stopped posting a few months ago.

If he has an actual location like a shop drop by see if it's still open, also maybe look into a back up plan which with such little time may be hard to come by.

Do the following ASAP and in this order :

    1) Find out what his studio hours are and stop by, you and your FH.

    2) Send a registered/certified letter with bullet points of what took place and what you want him to do and by when. Include what transpired when you stopped by.

    3) Start looking at other photo options.

Ask your venue and other vendors if they've heard anything about him. If he's out of the picture (for whatever reason), ask them for referrals for a new photographer.

I'd be concerned as well. As a PP asked, you have a contract, right? I would look for ANY contact information for him, and try all of those.

If something happened to him there is not a lot you can do. Start contacting local photographers asap and see if you can be fit in. Hope everything works out for you.

Maybe make a public facebook post as to if anyone has any contact with him. Also check his facebook business or private page.

A lot of the photographers in my area now work from home reducing costs of a studio.

Agreed with what others have said. I'd start researching other options as a backup.

@OP I noticed you're in the midwest/WI area. Our photographer, Emily Sara Photography, is located in Harvard, IL and was fantastic. I'd recommend her if you end up on the search for someone new!

Thanks for all the feedback! To answer a few questions,

Yes we do have a contract.

His social media pages seem to be non active since January

I do have an address, unfortunately since we are doing a semi-destination wedding and we hired him from around there, going to his actual given address on the contract is going to be around a 7 hour drive back and fourth, which I superpose we'll have to make if we can't get this figured out at all.

Also, Kathryn- thanks for the tip on Emily Sara- Harvard is really close to Lake Geneva, WI where we're getting married, so I'll definitely look into her.

    Thanks everyone

Hi Taralaine - I am so sorry to hear about your situation. As a photographer this breaks my heart to hear. I would easily agree with everyone else. If you can continue not to be able to reach him, I would contact your local Better Business Bureau. I hope you have a contract, I would then suggest small claims court.

I'm sorry this is happening....not acceptable. I'd start then with a Certified letter and create a deadline before starting a small claims court case. Keep us posted!
