Ordering Dresses for Expecting Bridesmaids

Jordan, on May 6, 2021 at 12:12 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 6
Hi! Hoping for some help with this - I have two bridesmaids who are pregnant and are more or less about halfway along. Both will have the babies before our wedding (one is 2 months before and one is the month before). We are working on ordering bridesmaid dresses for them now. The salon recommended that we measure them as they are currently, and then order a dress 2 sizes up from their current size. For example, one bridesmaid (due 2 months before wedding) is currently 23 weeks pregnant and measured into a size 14, so the salon recommends we order her a size 18. I totally understand that it is much easier to alter down than it is to alter up and am 100% supportive of erring on the side of caution... I am just worried that the dress will be so big that having it altered down that much will affect the integrity of the dress. Obviously the bridal salon is the expert here, not me, but I’d be interested to hear other thoughts. Has anyone had similar experiences before? How did you handle ordering dresses for expecting bridesmaids?

Are you deadset on ordering from a salon? Ordering from somewhere like Azazie allows you to choose from lots of styles and dresses usually take like 6 weeks to come in. So they may be able to wait untl right after baby to order. I'm currently doing this - due late June for a wedding in early september! So i'd 1) let them wait til the last possible minute and 2) follow the bridal salons advice.

Unfortunately we have already ordered half of our dresses from the salon, so if we went elsewhere, our colors wouldn’t match up perfectly 😕 thank you for the advice!

    What style are the dresses?

If they are A-line, I would say you have more flexibility with fit and alterations. If a more fitted design, it could be tricky to pinpoint the correct size for the wedding (as bodies fluctuate so rapidly during pregnancy and immediately post-partum, and alterations usually take some time). Also some fabrics/designs are more forgiving than others. Stretch fabric can be a bit more challenging to sew (no issue for a pro-tailor though) but will be more forgiving if the fit isn't precise. Wrap dresses, corset back styles, and convertible/infinity dresses all have flexibility with sizing that can be self adjusted by the wearer at the last minute.

I would definitely consider a dress style/fabric that will be forgiving and easier to adjust or wear without a precise fit, especially since this impacts two of your maids. Then I would go with what the salon suggests for sizing based on the pregnancy timeframe you have provided. Good luck!

This is great advice, thank you so much! Each maid is choosing her own style dress in our color, and the salon owner has been so nice about helping us determine styles that will be flattering for them. I just want all my gals to be happy and feel confident on our day!

Show the dress style, please, to see what features it has to make an easy cutdown alteration.
