Ordering bridesmaids dresses?

Sarah, on April 5, 2021 at 10:06 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 22
So my wedding is October 1st, 2021 (6 months away!) And I asked my bridesmaids to have their dresses ordered by the end of March. No one has ordered their dresses...the day I asked them to be bridesmaids (July last year) I told them my expectation was for them to be ordered by the end of March. I'm giving them the option to pick any dress as long as it's in the same color so they can chose what they want and an amount that's a bit more feasible for them.. they are now telling me that there's plenty of time and they want to wait, I'm rushing them. I'm genuinely upset and trying not to go bridezilla lol. Am I rushing them, cuz I feel like they need time to order their dress, make sure they like it and that it fits, get alterations if they chose, or return and order a new one if need be.

As long as it’s no specific style, they have more than enough time. I’d ask them to have it by July if you’re worried, but even that is plenty of time.

Very few bridesmaid dresses require a 6 month lead time. I would just try to let this go and trust that they'll get it in time.

You dont' need to dictate when they get dresses. They have the information. Let them shop as they can/want to.

Hi Sarah, I’m like you. I hate waiting till the last minute because there will be plenty of last minute stuff and you don’t need dresses to be one of them 📝. If possible, a month from now, offer to meet them at David’s Bridal with an appointment to get the ball rolling. Just a side note, I’ve been in many weddings and couldn’t imagine telling the bride she was rushing me! I always tried to be supportive and follow directions because I didn’t want to be “that bridesmaid” ❤️

You’re rushing them. There’s no reason their dresses need to be ordered this far in advance.

So the majority of you guys are telling me I'm rushing. I hear ya, and I haven't gone off on anyone. I've just been checking in as a side note so y'all don't hate on me. WHEN should I be worried &/or should they have their dresses by? Cuz everywhere on Google and my books say 6 months that's where I got it from... We are ordering from Azazie I forgot to mention!

The lead time is going to 1000% depend on the vendor. David’s Bridal is going to turn them around quick because they have USA distribution centers. I don’t know much about Azazie but I imagine you’re probably correct in wanting to allow for long delivery windows.

For that reason and the unpredictability of online sellers, I have opted to go to DB (basically all the styles I liked her under $160 plus they offer $20 promo with their rewards thing). I also considered Rent the Runway and Birdy Gray but the sight unseen part of it just made me anxious.

I am 110% like you. I much rather have a lot of things done with time because you never know what could go wrong! Example, I received MY wedding dress and it was the wrong style... had I waited any longer I wouldn’t have had time.
With my bridesmaids, I also ordered from Azazie. I had an email saying they’d be taking longer to deliver due to high demand. Early January I asked all of them for their size. Gave them about a week to give me measurements. And I placed the order myself for all their dresses. Dresses came last week. took about 3 months for the dresses to come. My wedding is June. So I’d say maybe ask them for the style and size and payment by end of May. Beginning of June you place one big order (especially if they’re all using the same color, don’t order seperate from azazie or it won’t be the same scheme.) By September they should come and will have time for alterations if needed Smiley smile

Azazie has been pretty good with relatively fast delivery. I think their production time is about 6-8 weeks and then at least another week for USPS to deliver. Azazie does offer free custom sizing so if you're worried about everyone having time for alterations, that is always an option (you can't return custom size dresses though!). Otherwise, for an October wedding I would say you want to have the dresses end of August/early September so so probably order in July.

I think if they know they are ordering from Azazie and what color, then you dont' need to check in on them. They know when you're wedding is and they will have a dress. This is not something you need to think about.

I would agree that they still have time to choose and order them but it is not wrong of you to check in on them now to see where they are in the process. I think if you talk to everyone individually at the beginning of July and ask if they have chosen and ordered the dress (or if they are having any issues picking one) then that might be the best route. That way, you can be excited to see what they are thinking about and choosing without being a demanding bridezilla.

I 100% understand why you want it done early, I'm the same as you because I want everything done early! I think you're good if they order by July though, there's still a lot of time. I ordered from Azazie and it came in about 2 weeks!

I would be nervous too. I took my daughter and future step daughter to David's bridal early March and got their dresses ordered, they aren't supposed to come in until late June. Our seamstress who is a family friend who used to do this professionally but is now retired would not confirm alterations completed if we got them in any later than that. One dress that my daughter wanted, would not have come in on time so had to pick a different one. Our wedding is August 14th this year.

My wedding is September and only one of my girls has ordered there dress. I also ordered from Azazie, it took 4 weeks for her dress to come on (quoted 6-8 weeks) I would give them until July to order. Side note my best friend is currently pregnant and due in July and isn’t planning on ordering hers until august 1 month before my wedding!! She’s putting a rush on it but I’m still worried that it won’t be here in time. I know how you feel tho 100%

You are, likely unintentionally, being inreasonable. Unless you are in the expensive dress cloud, custom or $4,000 up, bridesmaids take 2-10 weeks to come in. If true to size, the closest to the wedding someone is measured and orders, the more likely the dress is to need no alterations except hem. Any BM/MOH who has been pushed to buy early before, gained or lost 15 pounds or more, and been asked to pay $200 alterations on a $150 dress, more than doubling the cost, won't let another bride do that to them again. Each maker is different, ask here for people's experience. But one like Azazie that says 10 weeks production, order at 4 months, or 16 weeks. down to fastest, Davids often 2-3 weeks. Those labeled at fast order by 2,5 or 3 months. ... When you asked them to be your bridesmaids most cli ked off in their head, have money by 4 months out. Don't say anything o er and over, as people get mad. At 5 months, ask people to order by 4 months unless they can show you the dress is usually weeks.

I did the same with my bridesmaids. But I wanted all of them to have the same dress. They will just have different shoes, hairstyles, etc.

Honestly, I would be upset too. If you gave them a certain time, they should respect that and do as you asked. It’s not their wedding, it’s yours. And you are right, alterations and such do take time and who knows how much longer it will take with COVID. Also, depending on when you get them, some dresses are only sold in certain seasons.

I don’t feel like it’s rushing and I know with covid there have been some delays. Hopefully they would understand. Plus they’ve had a ton of time to plan!

I just ordered a bridesmaids dress from Azazie last week for my sisters wedding which is the first weekend of June. My estimated delivery date is like the last week of May so I'm cutting it close. Maybe Sept/Aug would be more feasible.. it's enough time for Azazie's shipping times but leaves a little extra time for alterations. If they want to return/exchange to Azazie that would be a longer process.
