Options for dj

Hello All:

Ceremony at Church - Reception at a different venue (both places are 5 mins apart)

I'm trying to decide how much time I will need the DJ for on the day of. I was thinking of having the DJ for the ceremony, cocktail hour and reception totaling 6 hours. My planner mentioned that many people don't use a DJ for the cocktail hour and instead just use them only for the reception. She suggested to cut on costs and not have the DJ to transport equipment from one place to another. She mentioned we can have a playlist of songs playing through the sound at the church for the ceremony, plus we have a soloist who will sing 2 selections during the ceremony and we can just have the DJ play for the reception (4 hours).

Do many people opt out of having a DJ for all 3 (ceremony, cocktail hour and reception) and instead have the DJ for the reception only?

OR

Do people have the DJ play for ceremony and reception?

I would think you wouldn’t need one for ceremony as the church may provide music?

Our DJ will be at our reception for the whole 6 hours including cocktail hour. Not sure how we would play music on a playlist without their speakers and equipment anyway since our venue requires the DJ to provide all of that. As for our ceremony, it’s at a church so we didn’t need a DJ during that time.

    Hi Nicole,

If we did do the playlist we would connect the iPad to the church sound system.

That’s a good suggestion they gave you of only having them for reception. I mean you could technically use them for the entire wedding day but generally you wouldn’t need to

We had ours for cocktail hour and reception. One thing to keep in mind is that the DJ will need time to set up (ours got to the venue like 2 hours early to test his equipment and everything). If you just have a DJ for the reception, they may be setting up during cocktail hour which would be potentially disruptive to guests if it's taking place in the same area

Talk with your church before you make any changes to your DJ. I would say full cocktail and reception is about 6 hours.
