Options for dj

Hello All:

Ceremony at Church - Reception at a different venue (both places are 5 mins apart)

I'm trying to decide how much time I will need the DJ for on the day of. I was thinking of having the DJ for the ceremony, cocktail hour and reception totaling 6 hours. My planner mentioned that many people don't use a DJ for the cocktail hour and instead just use them only for the reception. She suggested to cut on costs and not have the DJ to transport equipment from one place to another. She mentioned we can have a playlist of songs playing through the sound at the church for the ceremony, plus we have a soloist who will sing 2 selections during the ceremony and we can just have the DJ play for the reception (4 hours).

Do many people opt out of having a DJ for all 3 (ceremony, cocktail hour and reception) and instead have the DJ for the reception only?

OR

Do people have the DJ play for ceremony and reception?

I'm just having the DJ for cocktail hour and reception. Originally, it was just reception, but then I realized that my guests would be in the same space as he was setting up (my cocktails have to be in the same location as reception for space purposes) so I had him come in for the cocktail hour, too. I like the idea of having the DJ for cocktail hour anyway, because then that's one less thing you have to worry about for sound. Just my opinion though Smiley smile

I had our DJ for all, but my ceremony and reception was at the same venue, so it was easier that way.
Is your cocktail hour not at your reception location? I think you can definitely use the church sound system during the ceremony. If your cocktail hour is at your reception site, which is typical, I’d have the DJ start then.

I would use the DJ for all, just like Meghan said. It just seems easier unless cocktail hour is not in the same place as reception
