Opinions needed- Continue diy or get a Florist??

Sarah, on February 28, 2020 at 12:53 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 15
Hi! I’ve been driving myself crazy going back and forth on what to do for my centerpieces for my 6/20/20 wedding and need some other opinions please:

Many months ago I paid around $200 for a bunch of preowned wedding decor- which included 36 cylinder vases on which I ended up painting a rose gold glitter bottom (see below). My idea was to buy pillar candles and have a flowerless centerpiece... however there’s a few setbacks to my terribly planned DIY method:
1) I only have enough vases for 12 tables and if everyone I invited shows up I will need 14 tables- so I would have to either buy more and go through the painting process again (ugh) or just hope 2 tables of people won’t come and worry about it the whole time.2) The pillar candles would be around $150 to buy and I feel that just the vases/candles is too plain so I’m struggling to find more things to buy (I bought one wood round to see what it would look like and it ended up cracking in half so that’s not going to work) to spruce it up but I’m afraid I’ll just end up spending too much.3) I have to bring all this stuff to the venue either the night before (if I’m lucky) or the day of my wedding and hope it is set up correctly by catering staff.
Since I do need a bouquet, I contacted a florist and I got a quote of $40/table for the floral centerpieces in the second picture below so it would be $560 for all 14 centerpieces. Also- they’d deliver so I don’t have to worry about that aspect.
Do I keep worrying about the DIY vase centerpieces and keep adding more cost/effort to it, or do I scrap the idea entirely and shell out $560 for peace of mind? It is less about the money (though I do hate spending money on flowers that will die) and more about the wasted effort and not using the vases at all. Also I would not resell them because honestly my paint job is not great...Opinions needed- Continue diy or get a Florist?? 1

If I were you I would go with the florist and flower centerpiece, I think you will thank yourself.

You could just add some simple flower petals just sprinkled around those vases to add a little extra. Do you have two tables of just family or wedding party members? Because those two could just end up being a different centerpiece to make them stand out. Like how some people do head tables and what not

Girrrrrrl I was in the same situation several months back. I had full intentions of DIY’ing my floral centerpieces, but reality smacked me hard. For starters, it was way more expensive than I thought it would be to DIY. Also, I found I was not great at putting together floral arrangements. Finally, the idea of hauling all that stuff to the venue and either spending a ton of time putting it together myself, or trying to give instructions to others and hoping it all worked out OK, was just way too much stress. I ended up scrapping that entire idea and called a florist. Now I can breathe easy knowing a professional will be creating beautiful, real floral centerpieces for me; as well as delivering them and setting them up. Did it cost 4x as much?... yes. Was it worth it for time savings and peace of mind?... omg YES!! I have not regretted it one bit. That is the only payment I have made to a vendor where I was actually glad to see the money leave the account LOL

Flower petals could work.. I think the expectations of what I wanted in my mind would end up being way more effort than just that though. Unfortunately no, I don’t even have a wedding party and immediate family alone takes up like 3 tables.

So I’m not alone in my struggles!!!! Lol Yes- I way underestimated the time, effort, and money that DIY would end up being. I probably could get to a point of actually liking how the centerpieces look- but I guarantee it would require hundreds of dollars more and hours of searching for what to buy and I would still have to drop them off at the venue and trust people to do it right...
I think I’m just going to have to let them go. I’ll probably be super relieved once it is over!!

Hire the florist, and find another way to incorporate the cylinder vases in your decor. I mean you already have them, might as well use them somehow!

Here is an idea to use them down your ceremony aisle!

I agree about going with the florist.... You can always donate the vases to an organization or thrift store. Daughter originally had ideas about making her centerpieces, but just didn't like the way any reasonable DIY options looked. When she found her florist, we were shocked to realize she was only going to charge us $30-35 for low centerpieces -- including the table numbers (and she even painted the vases gold for daughter). To have them all just "magically" appear on the tables the day of and look both beautiful and consistent with the other florals and decor was MORE than worth it (and probably cheaper than any supplies we would have purchased). Good luck!

If you're a costco member, take a look there, I got great centerpieces with my flower package. They may need to be cut down but they were beautiful.

Honestly, I think you don't have to worry about the tables. We invited 170 people and are only 130 accepted. You will have some declines. I was going to do DIY flowers, however the stress of picking flowers and having to schedule to put them together and set up, etc. was just too much! That is a fantastic price for what you want plus set up! I say go with the florist because then you don't have to worry and stress.

The hard part about DIY is not making it but traveling to venue to set up. There often isn’t time for brides and grooms to to that! I think you should just go with the florist and have one less thing to worry about. If you want to continue with your original plan, perhaps you can ask a few members of your bridal party to do set up instead? Or try to hire someone on a platform like TaskRabbit to do set up?

I’m using similar wooden boxes, I found an amazing lady who does silk flowers that look real she is charging me $14 per centerpiece and I bought the boxes at hobby lobby when they were 50% off so $2.50 each. We are going to let guest take them home if they would like. Specifically our family who are crafty and will re-use the flowers. I think you’re vases are beautiful and could be used. We are doing 3 different centerpieces. The ones I said above, we are doing a lantern with flowers coming out of it and we are doing a wooden slab with a mason jar with flowers and votive candle holders with twine wrapped at different parts of each.
