Open Seating

Is anyone having open seating for their reception? My FMIL really does not want to do a seating chart, but every article I have read says that open seating is a bad idea for a reception.

We're doing open seating with reserved tables for immediate family. Only been to one wedding with assigned seating, and it was awkward and uncomfortable.

I've been to many weddings and only one was open seating. It was awkward. We had a hard time finding a seat and several people had to move to accommodate others. I will definitely be assigning tables (I've never been to one where the exact seat was assigned)

I know it's generally unpopular opinion here but we are having open seating. Every wedding with a seating plan I have been to I hated. I'm trying to make improvements based on experience.

I don't want to deal with the drama of putting people at a table they don't want to be at so I think I am going to reserve three tables for parents, grandparents, and siblings and then let the rest of our guests figure it out. My guest total will be 70-75 so after the three reserved tables, I am hoping 45 adults can just figure it out on their own

Just went to a wedding today and left 30 minutes after being at the reception dinner. This was open seating. My husband and I placed our belongings on two chairs side by side at an empty table. After getting a beverage we returned to find that 4 "ladies" moved our belongings to one chair and placed their purses on the chairs we chose. Thrre were plenty of other chairs available. The person that moved our items just looked at us and did not even acknowledge what she had done. She left the table to procure a drink for herself. What did I do? Dumped my glass of wine discretely where her table space was and on her napkin. Tipped her chair so her purse went far under the table as well as the chair/purse next to hers. As my husband and I were leaving, I tapped her on the shoulder and told her that her purse fell on the floor. People with anxiety cannot deal with rude mannerless people; we may stoop to that level. Moral of the story? Assign tables.
