Open Bar: What to Stock?

Pancakes, on August 14, 2015 at 1:22 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 12

I've asked a couple people in the past, but don't seem to get beyond Vodka and Rum. Lol. We need to buy the alcohol for the bar, so what should we provide for a full bar? I don't know what people like to drink.

We will, of course, have:

Beer

Wine (at least 1 red, 1 white)

Vodka

Jameson (Whiskey) - Big drink with our crowd.

Rum - Any recommendations on the brand? Someone said Captain Morgan.

Is Tequila widely used? Or just get a couple bottles?

Do people drink Gin?

Our wedding will be around 200-250 people and a large range of drinkers. Thanks!!

ETA: Venue provides pop and mixers. But we will add Redbull and Grenadine.

In my crowd, Tequila is big but mainly just for shots and the occasional margarita. Rarely ever do I hear Gin other than older crowd.

Yes, I'd do tequila--people might want margaritas. I enjoy gin & tonics from time to time, so maybe have some of that as well. What kind of mixers are you having? Other than what you've listed, I'd have maybe a bourbon-style whisky in addition to the Jameson. If you don't want to stock a million different things, maybe just come up with a couple signature drinks in addition to wine/beer.

I'm getting vodka, rum, tequila, and gin. What's every left over I will hold until labor day when I usually have a BBQ anyway.

We are providing our own bar too. For liquor we have vodka, captain morgans, seagrams 7, jack daniels, coconut rum (my favorite) and fireball for shots! Smiley smile

A lot of men drink Scotch, which I didn't see on your list.

I am providing my own bar all together so we are probably only going to do vodka, whiskey, and rum. i dont want to have to stock mixers for margaritas etc... and other than those my crowd isn't big on tequila.

we may also get some stuff for shots like fireball and mcgillacuddy's

That all sounds about right. You probably don't need too much tequila. A couple of bottles should do just fine Smiley smile

For the rum, my absolute favourite rum is Havana Club, but as a second choice I would probably choose Bacardi (gold or dark). however I am biased I like dark rums and I don't love spiced rum where as I think a majority of people like Captain Morgan's Spiced Rum... so maybe that is your best choice. We would have Gin because FW is a Gin drinker (exclusively so), but I also think tequila is a good idea.

I would say go with Captain Morgan for your rum. You could also consider doing both Captain Morgan and Bicardi so you have a clear and a dark rum. I also think you should have Jack Daniels in addition to Jameson as both a very popular. I agree that most people are fine without having gin as an option. Tequila really depends on your crowd.

I'd do one white and one dark rum. Personally I like Sailor Jerry over Captain Morgan for dark rum. I like Bacardi for white.

Definitely vodka and a whiskey (add a bourbon). People do drink gin sometimes, but you wouldn't need as much as you will rum, whiskey, and vodka I think.
