Open Bar Question

Lacy, on September 30, 2019 at 4:25 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 12

We are going to have an open bar at our wedding. We haven't decided if we are going to do beer and wine only or do beer, wine and liquor. If we do beer and wine only, we will upgrade the to better craft brews and better wine than what is provided in the basic package for our venue. If we do beer, wine and liquor, we are considering keeping just the standard beer and wine options (which aren't terrible) to offset the additional cost. Does anyone have thoughts on what they think is best? Do you feel like more guest would appreciate the variety and the availability of liquor or would prefer to have better quality wine and expanded beer options? I myself am a wine snob, but I'm also very happy with a gin or tequila drink in hand.

It's definitely a know your crowd thing, but most people that I know would prefer a full open bar. My friends are also Bud Light people so, take that with a grain of salt. I think a full open bar is nice because you know that every person will have something that they like.

I'm opting for beer and wine only because there are way too many stories of people who can't act right around liquor, especially unlimited amounts that they don't have to pay for. Yes, people can still get drunk off of beer and wine if they want to, but it isn't nearly as instantaneous as liquor. I don't want any drunk wild cards at our reception, so we're having limited beer and wine (once it's out, it's out).

I personally love craft beer. Considering your wedding date, would this also include an Oktoberfest? I love Oktoberfest personally, probably my favorite type of beer. It would also be unique for your wedding too, to have craft beer.

As a guest, I'd appreciate a full open bar vs. nicer beer & wine. I know my husband would agree. But it's a "know your crowd" thing for sure.

WE decided to go with just beer and wine, because it was a lot more expensive to add liquor. There is also a bar right next to the reception room that is always open to the public. If anyone wants hard liquor, they can go next door and buy it. We wanted to offer our guests something, so the compromise is open beer and wine.

I think you know your crowd. For us we knew more of our friends wanted liquor and mixed drinks so we went for a full open bar.

I think the full open bar with liquor is the best option unless most of your guests like craft beers and what not. I’m from PA and most of my crowd drinks lager (yuengling) which is included in the beer, wine, and liquor package so I’ll be good!

My dream venue that we ended up not booking only offered beer and wine packages and it was..ready... $48 ppl for 4 hours of just beer and wine..food and desert was extra obviously more than doubling per person cost. Our 2nd choice venue (unreal food and great atmosphere) offered $20 open bar w too shelf liquor package..it was a no brainer. The first venue refused to work w me on the price even though I showed them a proposal from the place we ended up going with.
I'd personally be fine with beer and wine and most ppl I know would be too. If beer and wine was $20 and open bar $48 I'd go for beer and wine.

My husband and I appreciate a good craft beer or fine wine as well, so we personally lean that way. But with hosting a wedding, we know not everyone wants something as rich so if I were in your shoes I think I’d do the full bar with liquor and lower end beer/wine. As for you and your FS, it may be worth checking with your venue if they don’t mind if you bring one bottle of a high end wine for you and your FS to enjoy. Some venues may look the other way for the married couple. 😊

I didn’t care either way but FH wanted an Open Bar, which meant keeping the base wine/beer offering. We are having our Rehearsal Dinner at a brewery so the craft beers will be the night before lol.

Anyway, the open bar allows us to offer our signature drinks, which we actually need to think of (kinda ironic that we don’t know what our “signature” drink is lol). Something fun to decide on our whenever we have a minute to think.
