Open bar - how much drinks to get?

Sharyl, on September 5, 2019 at 4:38 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 1 5

Hi! We have open bar at our wedding and we are providing the alcohol ourselves. How much alcohol do you recommend me buying for 150 guests? We were planning to have a his & her signature drink so I wasn't sure how much to get.

We plan on doing this for our wedding of roughly 100 guests! We aren't having liquor at all and we don't plan on providing near enough to allow our guests to get drunk (also a Sunday wedding so most people will have work the next morning anyways). So just bottled beer and wine (5-6 drinks per bottle I believe).

The articles I've read say you should accommodates 2 drinks per guest during cocktail hour and 1 drink per guest every hour after until the end of the reception. For us that would be roughly 500 drinks, but my dad talked us into only doing about 300 considering a lot of people probably won't drink given it's a Sunday evening and then that leaves too much alcohol left for the heavy drinkers to take advantage of. But that's just the method we're using, hope this helps!

Like PP said, most articles will recommend 2 drinks pp during cocktail hour then one drink pp every hour after. If you're having a typical 4 hour reception, that would be about 900 drinks. That can be really over or really under depending on your crowd. This is something I would definitely consult your bartender about.

We are also having an open bar. We are serving 3 kinds of beer, 2 kinds of wine, our signature drinks, and 3 kinds of hard liquor for mixed drinks (Vodka, Whiskey, and Tequila). Both our families are drinkers so we purchased enough alcohol for 150 people although we only have 110. We would rather have a bit extra at the end of the night than potentially run out.

I looked at a lot of different websites that tell you how much to buy and they all say the same thing, with a difference of a couple bottles (3-5 max). However, this website was by far the easiest to use and read.

Makes total sense! My brother did point that out to me that not all the guests will be drinking so I definitely need to keep that in mind. I am just trying to avoid bringing home tons of bottles of alcohol since our venue is in SoCal and we live in NorCal Smiley catface
