Open bar cost, does this sound right?

ReneeEdward, on April 4, 2017 at 11:05 AM Posted in Planning 0 39

The hotel our reception is at gave us their price list. Having a full open bar costs the same as a beer and wine open bar. I think that's a little odd. Then they gave me the pricing. The cost is $19.95 per person, per hour. So I have 140 guests, it would be 140 x 19.95 x 5hours which comes out to some where around 12,000. Our food cost is $4000, so the bar would be 3x that. Does that sound right?

Our open bar was $20 extra per person total. Are you sure about the per hour part?

The breakdown sounds kind of weird (that alcohol is that much more than food) but the total price sounds right to me. Is your food a per person price as well? My venue is all inclusive, so approx $100 per person for food and 5 hr open bar, which would be right around $14,000 for 140 guests, which isn't too far off from your numbers.

Mine was $40 per person for the entire time. I would check, that seems really high.

Are you sure about the "per hour" part? There might be a one time fee that you're multiplying. It does sound slightly high to me.

That sounds insane. Our PP price was based on what types of alcohol we wanted to provide and how many hours we needed, multiplied by the amount of guests. The "per hour" part doesn't seem right to me.

No, definitely doesn't sound right. Check with your venue and make sure its not a flat rate of 19.95 pp

Sounds high to me. We are doing consumption but the venue coordinator estimated it would be around $8k for 200 people, with cocktail hour/reception going from 6-11.

I would ask again because that's way too high.

The venue FH and I went with is bring your own alcohol, but the other venues we were looking at were charging $8-$10 per person for open bar for 5 hours. Yes, that sounds ridiculously high.

    Edit: words

I think it depends on where you are and what type of bar you're planning to host. We are doing a DW in Jamaica, and the standard national bar is $10/person/hour, but the premium bar is $26.50/person/hour.

Are you sure you're using the right calculation? My venue has a cost of $17 per person for the first hour, and $7 per person for each additional hour

Yeah that doesn't sound right. Ours is $39/pp for the entire event, and will be about $5k at the end of the night. That's way too high.

The host bar is at the bottom. I wrote up top what the hotels coordinator said.

Also, don't mind the superman pjs at the bottom of the photo. Lol I'm still in pjs, fh's to be exact.

That sounds crazy. I would double check that. The drinks should not be more expensive than food. When we were looking at venues we saw around 19-22 per person for the whole evening. (rural iowa)

No it doesn't. As PP have stated, I'd check the per hour part. At that rate you might as well pay for full consumption as I can't imagine every one of your guests can rack up a $100 bar tab.

I could not fully read your sheet, but based on the prices they have outlined, it almost looks like a consumption bar would be a little more economical in the end.

Our options were $15.00 pp (beer, wine, soda), $19.00 per person (standard 5 hour open bar), $21.00 (premium 5 hour open bar). So your costs sound right the hourly rate is what I would double check. The prices I quoted were totals for the entire 5 hours. We did look at other venues that had an hourly rate but the following hours were significantly cheaper than the first. If consumption is an option, that's even better.
