Open bar, cash bar, limited bar?

Munkos, on June 13, 2014 at 9:27 AM

I know this is a sticky subject since it's considered bad etiquette to do a cash bar or drink tickets - but what is everyone planning on doing to cut the costs and what kind of bar are you having?

We're doing open bar all night, but only serving wine, beer, and champagne.

Full open bar for the wedding (only option at our venue), but drink tokens for our rehearsal dinner. We have done this for all rehearsal dinners in my family and it's worked out well. You can make the tokens a fun DIY project. I'm not sure if I would do this for a wedding, but it's definitely better than a cash bar or a limited bar tab expiring without notice (which I have seen).

Full open bar. I wouldnt mind a limited bar but I hate cash bars. I might not mind no alcohol if it were an afternoon wedding.

Full open bar for the whole 8 hours. That was one of my top priorities.

We're going to a beach bar and buying a round for everyone after the ceremony on the beach.

I'm impressed! I've never been to an open bar wedding - it's always been a toonie bar or drink tickets.

That said, we are giving 3 drinks to everyone and then doing drink tickets. The only downside to our venue is we have very little control over the alcohol - the bar is open for 8.5 hours or not open at all, we can't bring our own alcohol in, we can't do a limited bar, and we pay full price for drinks as if we just walked in off the street $5-$7 a drink. Right now we are pre-paying an estimated $40 per adult, but I know my group and I know in 8.5 hours a good majority of them will go over that!

But, most of our guests are married and we have been to all of their weddings and they have done the same thing so I don't expect anyone will be bothered by it at all!

In my area, (northern NJ/NY) I have only seen full bars and limited (beer/wine/sig). I have never, in about 1100 weddings, seen a cash bar.

We're doing full open bar along with a signature drink with a cap of $1k. We'll be lucky if we have 100 guests total (guest list stands at 108 presently and that's with obligatory invites that I know will decline) and we don't have a lot of heavy drinkers :-)

We're doing a full open bar and might upgrade the bar to have more liqueurs available.

I would be perfectly fine with a limited bar but cash bars are tacky. I was at a family wedding last week and there was a lot of bitching about the cash bar.

After a venue change we are now able to supply our own alcohol and just pay a bartender fee ($650) We plan on having 3 different kinds of beer 1 kind of red wine 1 kind of white wine and we are still debating on a signature drink.

It would be soooo stupid for us to do a full open bar. At least half of our guest list doesn't drink at all, so that would be money down the drain.

We are paying by consumption (suggested by our vendor) where we put down 2K and when it's gone, it's gone. I'm still leery because I HATE drunk people, but I know some like to drink.

We are doing cash bar (I know, shock and horror). Non alcoholic drinks are free, wine on the tables.

Open wine and beer. We are also doing premade apple pie moonshine. We only have 100 people, with about half being snobby beer drinkers (and I say that with love haha....they brew beer and love craft beers), so we won't do kegs but bottles.

We are doing limited bar due to our venue restrictions.

First 3 hours will be 2 signature drinks (we were originally limited to 2 kinds of hard alcohol for 2 hours, but I negotiated in another hour. I could have had 4 hours with 1 type of alcohol, but he drinks whiskey and me vodka...so no no no no)

After the first 3 hours, we will have beer and wine. We are supplying our own alcohol to be served by a licensed bartender. I have a friend who runs a brewery, so kegs it is! Wahoo! hehe Wine ...I am not sure yet, I am thinking 2 red and 2 white. One sweeter and dryer on each side.

We are providing our own bottled beer, hard lemonade and wine. Once it runs out, it runs out (But it won't!)
