Open Bar at Rehearsal Dinner?

FutureMrsSmith, on August 19, 2015 at 12:20 PM Posted in Planning 0 61

Please don't tell me that making people pay for their drinks at the rehearsal is terrible. We just can't afford to have open bar at the restaurant we are having the rehearsal and we are having open bar at the wedding. So, it's not that bad, right?

Is there a way to do a limited bar? Beer and wine? We're having an open bar at our rehearsal.

Could you do a limited bar?

We're providing free beer and wine at our rehearsal dinner.

I think that's pretty bad. I know that's not want you want to hear. But why are you having the rehearsal dinner somewhere you can't completely afford? Drinks are pretty standard.

We're also having open bar the rehearsal. Can you just do beer and wine?

Yeah, unfortunately I have to agree with Lauren, drinks are standard at a dinner party. Why not try one of the limited suggestions people made or just find a new restaurant where you can afford to host drinks? You have plenty of time.

How many are you having? We had around 50 people and we paid for each drink (by consumption). The entire dinner was around $1200, I think?

Yeah, you should provide drinks. Are you letting people order off the normal menu or is there a special event menu? Most restaurants will let you pre-select what people can order from so that everyone's not ordering the most expensive thing on the menu.

We are doing Beer & Wine. I do think most situations if you invite them for dinner you cover their costs.

The last two RDs I've been to, soda and soft drinks were provided but we had to pay for our own beer/liquor. It was completely fine. We aren't having open bar at the RD

We are not providing drinks. We might do a few bottles of wine but that's it. My budget is only $600 for rd and with 20 people we are right there.

I plan events at restaurants all the time for my job. You can get one red, one white, and like 2 beers and have waiters offer those to guests instead to make it more affordable. You would buy wine by the bottle rather than glass which can often save a few bucks.

We aren't paying to have an "open bar" per say (price per guest per hour), but are just letting guests order whatever they want off the menu and paying for that.

We're not. But it's mostly because I don't trust his friends. I'm a little worried they're going to start drinking, then make a night out of it, and we have an early morning. We're providing non alcoholic drinks, but if they want booze, they have to buy their own. I know my friends will have no problem and will probably just drink the tea and lemonade provided.

Other than my FSILs RD i hadn't been to one that had an open bar. i dont even know what my FMIL is doing for ours, i don't think its a huge deal having people pay for their drinks at the RD. I know i wouldn't have an issue with it, i've done it before.

eta: wine or beer for dinner would be nice, but as long as the wine per glass isn't stupid expensive i don't see an issue.

We offered beer and wine. There was a limited number of beer purchased and once that was gone, guests were welcome to purchase their own at the restaurant. We made sure that there was enough to cover everyone during dinner and any speeches and mingling during the evening.

People shouldn't have to pay for anything at a dinner you've invited them to. However, you can set up a limited menu with the restaurant so that only beer and wine are offered. I do think you need to offer some type of alcohol. A glass of wine with dinner is pretty standard and expected.

We're having around 40 people and the average price in my area is about $25 to $30 per person for just the food. I know we definitely can't afford open bar, but I think we might be able to get away with consumption. The beer and wine is $16 per person per hour for two hours, each additional hour is $5 on top of that.

I'm not proving alcohol at all. I'm having a breakfast before the rehearsal. If you can't provide alcohol move the time up to lunch or breakfast if you can.
