Opal Engagement Rings

Quinn, on October 28, 2016 at 9:56 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 8

I'm absolutely in love with my diamond engagement ring, but I LOVE opal rings. I see them on my Instagram all the time; however, I want to see yours! If you have any type of opal engagement ring, please fuel my obsession and show me!

I wanted an opal e ring but they are way too soft. I'll be getting a moonstone instead. This thread is going to be my favorite thing ever!

Just an FYI, opals that are worn daily really don't survive over a lifetime. If you are ok with replacing the center stone every now and again, they are fine but if not then a harder stone is a better choice. I absolutely love opals so I can't wait to see if someone has one!

I inherited an opal ring that was my grandmother's. I think I've worn it twice in the last 10 years; I barely bumped it against something and it got chipped. I really don't advocate for an opal engagement ring - that's just too special an item, in my mind, to risk damage.

I have a gorgeous Australian opal pendant that I wear constantly; it was the first gift DH ever gave me. It's a great stone for a necklace, not so great for a ring or bracelet.

Opals break easily, not reccomended for everyday wear.

My grandmother has an opal ring. Married 68 years and no chips. Either she is remarkably graceful and cautious, or my grandfather secretly replaces the stone periodically.

I came on this thread to reiterate exactly what everyone else has already said.

Opals are too soft and a waterbased stone (which is why you see opals stored in oil/water solutions)

They are best kept to necklaces and earrings that aren't exposed to trauma and accidental chips

They are a beautiful stone! I would imagine it would be easy to chip or damage it wearing it daily though. I have a blue sapphire and I have already had to take it in twice because the stone was rattling. They can't put as much tension on it because it could shatter.

I wanted an opal ering, and my FH and I looked at them from many places over the course of a month. They ranged from gaudy costume jewelry with lab created opals for ~$100 to beautiful could-be-an-ering for $4k. At that price, the need to replace the opal every couple of years wasnt worth it to us. But, I plan to wear opals for my wedding jewelry!
