Only cake for dessert?

Haley, on December 9, 2019 at 1:43 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 18
Do people normally eat a lot of dessert? We want to do macaron favors (2 per person) and trying to think of ways to cut down cost... we’re toying with the idea of only having cake as the dessert, vs adding in mini-desserts from the caterer. Thoughts, opinions? Will people notice only one dessert option? (Technically two with the favors!)

I think just wedding cake is perfectly fine! I know dessert tables are a big trend right now, but I've literally never been to a wedding with any dessert other than cake lol.

If you're really trying to cut costs, you could absolutely skip the favors! Or if favors are a must for you, you could do something a little more cost-efficient like candy bags Smiley smile I'd imagine macarons are pretty pricey!

I think serving just cake is fine! We are having cake and ice cream and that is probably a bit overkill, but the ice cream is a nod to our first date at a local ice cream shop so we had to include it.

You can have your wedding cake and then do a sheet cake to keep costs down. I know people do a two tier wedding cake for themselves and then get a sheet cake from costco or somewhere.

Having cake is perfectly fine. Just because the big dessert bars are trendy doesn’t mean you have to do them. This is a great place to save money.

    Totally fine.

Every wedding we have been to the dessert bar is almost entirely untouched.

I Wish I could do a dessert table spread because I would like to eat desserts at my wedding but the reality is my caterer doesn’t supply desserts. I could hire someone else but the money is going towards extra for appetizers. My only dessert will be cake but i would love to have cheesecakes & extra stuff. Since you are Providing macarons as favors that will be extra nice and just cake will be fine.

Completely fine to just do cake!

Cake only was our original plan, though we are considering adding on a late-night "snack" station for s'mores. If we do, it would just be a bonus - I think everyone will be fine with just cake!

I work at a bakery and typically with a cake, not everyone eats a slice or some people will have a small slice, but with an assortment of mini pastries people are more likely to want to try a couple of different items so they can taste the different flavors and options. I think people eat more when you give them more options for dessert v.s. a cake.

Just wedding cake is very common. No worries.

Just the wedding cake is fine, but keep in mind that cupcakes are a lot cheaper! Plus you can get multiple flavors with cupcakes. For us, cake would be $4-9 a serving or $2.50 per serving for cupcakes, so it was a significant difference! We are doing a 6 inch cake for us, and then cupcakes and macarons for guests. You also probably don’t need 2 macarons per person if you are serving cake or cupcakes as your main dessert.

We're actually doing the same thing! Our restaurant venue's dinner already includes an individually plated cake dessert, so we opted not skip the wedding cake altogether. Instead we're doing 2 macaron towers (2 flavors), that people can grab macarons during dancing or take with them on their way out in treat bags.

One suggestion we got was to have the venue put cake out on a dessert table rather than to pass it out to each person. If you’re passing it out you need to make sure you have enough for everyone to get a slice. But by just putting it out those who want cake can just grab a piece and you can get away with ordering less—thus leaving you with room in your budget for other dessert items! Our venue offered cookies and brownies and I think we ordered 30ish less portions of cake than the number of people we had, but still had leftover cake! Talk to your bakery and they’ll help you come up with a number.

We're having a very small cake for my partner and I to cut, and the the VAST majority of the guest servings will be beautiful cupcakes. You can have both!

In our area it's common to have a cookie table. Its also inexpensive because you can/your family can bake the cookies ahead of time.

I did exactly that format for my wedding last weekend and it worked beautifully! I used Publix for a 3 tiered cake + 1/2 sheet cake. The caterer pre-cut the sheet cake (this expedited service after dinner so those with kids/early flights could gracefully exit right after the cake was cut) and served it. We had a ton of cake left as most people were too full from dinner/drinks and/or busy dancing.
