Kkzbride, on October 6, 2015 at 7:57 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 9

My fiancé and I are looking into premarital counseling, has anyone found a good online couples counseling service?

I strongly, strongly advise against online counseling. I'm a marriage and family therapist. You can't get the same connection with a counselor as you would face to face, and so much of couples counseling is picking up on personal interactions between the couple. I'm happy to help you find affordable in-person counseling--psychologytoday.com is a good place to start.

I'm going with Cats on this one, we're awesome Smiley smile

Or you could find some books on Amazon, that kinda like online counseling.

This is also a great website if you are a bible reader and want to go that route:

    http://www.jw.org/en/bible-teachings/family/couples-parents/

And of course was RingAround said is probably the best advice, find someone in your local area.

Good for you for wanting to get counseling though, too many couples push the idea away without really considering the benefits.

This doesn't seem like something you can do online. Therapists are trained to pick up on the subtle nuances of your relationship through your interactions with each other and your body language. They can't do their jobs effectively if you are not meeting in person, so basically you'd be throwing your money away. Lots of therapists work on sliding scales and insurance can cover a lot too. Find someone to go to in person and congrats on making the decision to go to counseling...that is a hard decision to get to.

Is there a specific reason you are choosing to do this online instead of in person? When you say online, do you mean the therapist or you the couple is out of town or travels a lot? I have heard of skype sessions, but these are obviously connecting couples with someone and not a random "whoever is online at the time"

I think if you are willing to invest this much into counseling, then you should do it in person

I definitely think counseling makes more sense to do in person. But just as an aside, I can recommend a great book that FH and I have been reading together and doing the exercises together. "Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work" by John Gottman.

    Hey,

here is a more serious answer. I represent a company who has a registered psychotherapist with his Masters degree in counseling psychology and specializes in marriage counseling. You are welcome to check out the website. Online counseling has many advantages: you can send a question and receive a response quickly unlike in person where you may have to wait 2 weeks before getting an appointment. You are able to send your first inquiry for free. It is much more affordable as you can pay for counseling time by the half hour or hour. Whether you go with this option or not best wishes I hope you all the best.
