One or two photographers?

Annie, on December 8, 2017 at 3:25 PM Posted in Planning 0 22

I'm in the process of searching for photographers and am wondering if it's better to have 2 photographers rather than 1. Has anyone had two? Do you feel that you got your money's worth of pictures? For people who had one photographer do you feel that they could get enough pictures for you? Thanks for the advice!

I'm doing two. Better variety of angles and coverage. It was not that much more for me to do two and I knew I'd probably regret it.

If it's not a big difference in cost, I totally recommend two!

I'm doing two photographers. We want to make sure we get as many shots as possible.

My friend, though, had one photographer and she got a lot of great shots so I think it depends on your preference really. And possibly how big your wedding is. If you're having a huge affair, two photographers might be helpful.

My photographer is bringing an assistant which is included in the package. I think it'll be helpful. One of my friends is a wedding photographer (not mine, I don't want "friendors") and she started out doing them alone. Its exhausting for one person to be running around while you and FH are getting ready in separate places, all of the faces and emotions of the ceremony, getting great angles of the cake cutting while family is standing in the way, etc. Of course she is newer and I feel like a serious pro will have a good timeline, plan of attack for things. I feel better having two, though. But I don't think its something you should break the bank over if you can't get them in a package.

It depends on your priorities. We had one photography for 6 hours (65 guests) and I had about 600+ photos once she was done editing. I never thought of getting two and am so glad I didn't, how many pictures of the same thing could I possibly want. Our photography captured every key moment, I have pictures of every guest, and some great staged pics. If you are into photography, passionate about it, you have a lot of guests, multiple venue sites, then perhaps consider two.

Thanks ladies! The photographers I've been looking into really aren't much difference in price, about $600 more for having two photographers compared to one. Of course my FH thinks we only need one, but I think it would be better to have two. I guess we can just cut somewhere else if we want to go with 2.

Meh. It really depends on the style and approach of the photographer and the experience you want. Personally, as a photojournalist wedding photographer, I don’t use a second. Because I don’t spend much time on the time consuming posed portraits and do a natural on the fly documentation of the day, it’s not necessary. Also for the sake of style consistency and a more non intrusive experience. I built a system this way, it works for me, and I am perfectly capable of telling a story without the redundancy and mismatched perspectives.

How do you know which is right for you? Look at complete weddings they’ve done, and sample albums. Compare styles and photographers, learn how they work. Go with the one who tells a story to your liking, regardless of how others think they should do it. If you like the start to finish documentation, there’s no reason to want it any differently.

Another bonus piece of information...I think the biggest mistakes people make when hiring wedding photographers is not knowing the difference between them and different styles and approaches of capture, hence a different experience. Also being hung up on how much and how many of this and that you get as opposed to the quality of what you get, even if it seems more minimalist. Some work best in teams, others work best solo. One great photographer is better than two mediocre ones.

We had originally started with one, but I want to make sure none of the photos are rushed of us getting ready or our reactions walking down. It's impossible for 1 photographer to catch that moment on both of us. In the end it's up to you and your budget as to how many you get.

    Impossible? No.

It still comes down to looking through a complete wedding or two, regardless of how they work, and seeing what is right for you overall.

Our photographers are a husband/wife team, and I love how they work together. They complement each other in their styles. My cousin also had two photographers, but their pictures all looked the same. I would honestly look at portfolios of the photographers you are considering, and ask about their particular styles.

@Annie, no worries, hope that helps. No photographer is perfect or everyone, just as what I offer is just right for the couples who choose me, but I’m not for everyone. Personal and emotional connection to their work and good personal connection with them is where to start.

I'm getting a second just for four hours. Basically from getting ready through the first dance. It was important to me to get two angles for the ceremony and also for there to be a backup in case something goes wrong with the first photographer. If his camera breaks during the reception and he misses five minutes of dancing, it's no big deal. For $280, it's worth the peace of mind.

Ours are a couple and have another person who's like an intern/apprentice they can use if they need additional help (videography)

I only had one photographer and she did a great job. The only thing that i would have liked two photographers for is the walk down the aisle. I have photos of me and my parents, but not Hs first look at me which is kinda annoying. Of course, this is also solved if you do a first look.

We decided that the photographer was one of our top three main priorities and what we would be willing to spend money on it we found one we liked. We are having 3 photographers actually. We loved the work and the different angels made one shot look like 3 totally different pictures. It makes things go much faster and we just loved the package we were getting. He has kids and did really well with mine present as we have lots of kids coming and want my vendors to work well with kids (some just don't so we had to find one that did). It's a main guy and his 2other shooter for 6 hours. I feel like I am more then getting my money's worth.

We're getting 2 photographers. We aren't doing a first look so want to make sure that both of our reactions are captured as I come down the aisle. If we only had 1 photographer, we'd have to choose who they photographed.

I get 2 people from the same company. One will do the photography, one will do the video.

I can add another person if I chose, I think it's better to have at least 2

I have 2 in my package. We are doing getting ready shots, first look, and everything else. It seems to work better with 2 and both photographers have such great reviews

We hired two. Our ceremony venue and reception space is pretty narrow so we wanted to make sure that each end gets proper photos!
