One Groomsman Under-age

Nicole S. (formerly Nicole C), on August 12, 2013 at 2:16 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 13

That GM happens to be my lil brother. He is 19 and everyone else is 24-26.

I want him to not feel left out but I want the other guys to have a good time. So far they've been kind of busting him (which I get) but FH is trying to come up with ideas for GM gifts and they all involve alcohol.

I told FH if he was going to get them flasks (his original idea) that he could get my brother one too (it's not actually alcohol...) but he thinks its inappropriate still. I'm at a loss- what do you think?

Idk, I think if you don't get him a flask it may make him feel like a little kid.

If all the GMs got a flask and I got a personalized water bottle I would feel like a baby lol

I would just get him the flask. He'll use it eventually.

If he's at college, I'm damn near positive he's already had a taste. Besides, it'll look "cool" in his dorm. Smiley smile

Oh I know he is drinking anyway... He is a soph in college he does what he wants. He isn't THAT far away from 21 and that's just it I don't want him feeling like a baby. I told FH that if he gets them all jack and coke he can just leave the jack out or something...

Not that I want him to be encouraged drinking... He does enough of that as it is.

I agree, give him the flask. I have one underage bridesmaid that I'm still going to give a wine glass to. She's 18 and FIL's let her drink so, why not. The only thing I'm doing different is my Jr. BM. She's 14 so I'm getting her a personalized tumbler, instead.

Tumbler might be a good idea- or get everyone "beer glasses" or "shot glasses" or something.

Everyone had shot glasses-right? Lol I just don't want him being completely different. A little different is fine I know they are leaving him out of some stuff.

What about pocket knives for all the guys or those Leatherman tools?

Unfortunately his friends are really into knives already and there isn't anything decent he can get them for our budget which is why he didn't go that route.

He is 19. I am guessing a flask will be well received.

I don't see anything wrong with the flask, at least that way he won't feel like he's being singled out as a "kid"

My sister is 19 and she will be getting a wine glass alone with my moh, and fsil(bm) as they're the ones who drink wine.

The others, 2 are getting some type of cocktail glass and one is actually getting the water bottle. She doesn't drink, but she's a big water/coffee/soda person, so the insulated bottle will work for everything she does.

My youngest brother (will be 16 when he is in my wedding next year) has already been in 2 other weddings. At both he received the same gift as the other groomsmen, and he will also receive the same gift that we give ours. He was the best man at my other brother's wedding last year and while giving the best man's speech grabbed a glass of champagne and downed it before any adults or wait staff could stop him, he was also drinking abandoned drinks when no one was looking.

So basically if they are underage and want to drink they are going to drink no matter what you do.

FH was in his brother’s wedding at 19 and he got an engraved flask along with the rest of the guys. We didn’t think anything of it. If he was 14 it’d be a different story, but 19 I think is fine.
