One glass per guest logistics?

Lauryn, on September 4, 2019 at 3:50 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 10

We are trying to keep our reception extremely low waste which led me to find the corner of the internet where people have given each guest one glass. I'm incredibly interested to learn more and hear about the logistics of how this actually worked. We plan on everyone having a water glass as well, but does it work for people to have one glass of their own with a multi-beverage bar?

If you have does this yourself or been to an event and experienced it first hand I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.

I went to a wedding like this a few years ago! They had mason jars with handles at the entrance to the reception, and a sticker (themed to their wedding colors / invites) to write in your name. It was your "drink glass" for the night, and you got to take it home afterwards. It seemed to work well. As long as you have the ability to rinse out glasses at the bar, I don't see any issues.

I'm personally not a fan, unless the bartender could wash out the glasses for me. I don't want to wash dishes at a wedding in a nice dress. I also would probably lose my glass to be honest. When people are dancing then will set them down and forget where they are, so they probably will have to ask for extra anyway.

If you’re using real glasses, I don’t see how having more than one glass per guest is causing any waste. I can see this being really inconvenient for guests who want to drink more than one type of beverage unless your bartenders plan to do dishes for a good portion of the night.

Same a Kate. We went to a wedding with handle Mason jars. There was a little chalkboard sticker with our names written on it... Not sure if it was at entrance or at our table. I don't remember drink contamination being an issue... We actually were talking to the sister of the bride who did this and fiance said something like wait so I drank different drinks out of the same glass all night!? We honestly didn't even remember.

That glass happens to be my favorite night time water glass! Fiance gives me a glass of water every night and it's almost always out of that glass bc it has my name and it has a handle!

Even if you’re planning on one-per, be sure to have extras available as glasses are easily misplaced or even broken

I don’t get this. Just rent proper glassware. It will be used before, after and during your wedding. Buying one glass per guest and “gifting” it to them at the end of the night isn’t less wasteful... your guests might not want that glass and will just leave it behind our toss it later. I think people tell themselves this is less wasteful to make it not feel cheap?

I can't see how this would work logistically. Glasses break, people set them somewhere then forget, or want to switch drinks. I'm assuming they would be tall glasses. Not the best for wine either if you are serving it.

I have been to two weddings like this where it was our favor! One had handled mason jar glasses and just beer/wine/one cocktail and the other had custom plastic cups made and had full bar. I saw no issue with the mason jar glasses specifically (our names were on a little tab on the lid); I didn't lose it or anything. I might've thought I lost my plastic cup at one point at the other wedding but she had extras up at the bar so I probably just grabbed a new one. As far as drinks go, the bartenders just washed out the cups if mixing and matching things but really wasn't a huge deal if you switched from one thing to another. As far as people dropping glasses, that could happen at any wedding with glasses... I say go for it but have extras! You probably will anyway because if you order these things in bulk, you might need to purchase a certain amount.

We're having our wedding at our favorite brewery and are giving a glass to use for the night. We've been to the brewery on multiple occasions for new beer releases where they give out a glass to use with purchase and reuse it for refills. I haven't decided whether we'll place them on the tables or as an escort card. We'll have additional disposable glassware for dinner/cocktail hour specialty drinks and the brewery has additional glasses for beer if the guests would like to keep their glass clean.

I am having to do this, but for another reason. My venue allows outside alcohol, but will not supply beer and wine glasses. So instead of getting disposable wine and beer cups, we decided to personalize real wine and beer glasses and hand them out at the bar for the guest to obviously use during the wedding and then to take home as a favor. I don't see any issues with my crowd in doing this.

The venue will still serve water, lemonade and soft drinks in their gobbler glasses.
