Old, New, Borrowed, and Blue

Orianna, on July 18, 2022 at 3:04 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 46

Hello all! Just wanted to see if anyone else was going old school and doing the whole "something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue"?

If you are - how are you incorporating these items into your outfit? Is there anything you're tweaking slightly? If not - why did you chose not to?

For me, I am doing it - I think its fun! Here are mine:

Old: the two necklaces I am wearing. One was made out of my maternal grandmother's engagement ring (I'm also wearing her wedding ring on my right hand) and the other was made out of a tie clip from my paternal grandfather.

New: My dress and my shoes!!

Borrowed: My mother is lending me a pearl and onyx bracelet that will blend seamlessly with my other accessories.

Blue: I have a small pair of studs that I just purchased that I'll wear in my 3rd hole (the top one, and where I put small studs usually) that are blue aquamarines - which happens to be my fiancé's birthstone!

I'm definitely planning to do this!

Old: I bought my dress in 2020 for our original date in 2021. It'll be almost 3 years old by the time I finally get to wear it for our wedding!

    New: Jewelry, shoes

Borrowed: I'm planning to borrow a coin from my dad to put in my left shoe (superstition supposed to be for good luck and financial prosperity)

Blue: My shoes are teal (one of our colors), but they pull more towards blue

Fun! I think a lot of brides who had to postpone due to Covid have their dress in the “old” category now.

Love the coin tradition! That’s a really cool concept.

Yes, I did. My something old was my grandma’s beaded clutch, c. 1950s-1960s. My something new was my dress. My something borrowed was my mom’s veil, c. 1983. And, last but not least, my something blue was my sapphire engagement ring (Our moms and my dad also wore blue).

I thought it was really fun to do as well! Each piece was very special to me. I actually combined 2 of the categories though.

Old & blue: My maternal grandmother’s garter. I was very close to her and she was the best example I had of unconditional love in my life. I was sad she passed before my wedding but it felt comforting have a piece of her there. Borrowed: My mother’s diamond stud earrings. There’s also a funny story where I *borrowed* these in high school without knowing they were real! My mother didn’t laugh then, but she does now 😂New: A beautiful pair of sculpted floral dangly earrings from Twigs and Homey that took my breath away when I first saw them. (I have multiple lobe piercings, hence the multiple earrings mentioned).

I did do this on our wedding day! It was a perfect way to include my family.

Borrowed: silver bracelet that my husband's mom let me borrow and then my mom's earrings
Old: my mom's pearls that have been passed down over timeNew: shoes, wedding dress, and veilBlue: Garter and bridesmaids dresses

I’m not doing it. We’re not very traditional people and I wanted all new stuff. I bought new jewelry, new shoes etc. I don’t wanna wear blue. Not borrowing anything upset my mother a bit but 🤷🏻‍♀️ But I do love seeing how everyone is doing it. It all seems very sweet

I'm kind of doing this, but with a twist! I'm giving my fiance 4 small gifts for our wedding, one for each theme of something old, new, borrowed, and blue. (The "something borrowed" is still something he gets to keep, it came from an idea that was "borrowed" from a TV show!)

I love that your grandmother kept her garter and you got to use it! I'm not doing one, but I think if I had one that was like that I probably would.

Also LOVE that you borrowed the same earrings you once "borrowed" in high school!

I wasn't too adamant to do it, but it kind of worked out. My dress was new, my bouquet had blue in it, and the old and borrowed were combined in my great-grandmother's diamond earrings I borrowed from my mom.

I toyed around with getting a silver sixpence for my shoe, but decided I wasn't going to end up with a unique blister because of money in my footwear lol

I think including the family is probably my favorite reason for doing it. Love that your blue was also your wedding party!

I didn't think I was going to do it as well, and then I realized I had planned on doing stuff that fit it anyways! The only thing I was missing was the blue and I found a way that I can do it subtly. But I love a nontraditional bride doing what works for her!

This is such a cool twist!!! I'm still wracking my brain on what to give my fiancé on the day (other than ya know, a wife) but this is a really cool way to do a tradition!
