Old but new dress

Renee, on June 18, 2019 at 6:01 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 10
I've posted on here before about questioning my dress and if I picked the right one. Not asking that again lol Long story short, I had bought a dress when I was young and dumb and engaged to the wrong person. When I went to find a dress, I didn't like one of the ones that the gentleman helping me had given me so I tried it on last. It was perfect. It was my fairytale, dreams do come true, love it to the moon and back dress. I've never actually worn it, (besides trying it on) and I've never gotten rid of it. But about 15 years and a lot of weight later, it doesn't fit. Would it be wrong to alter and wear that dress instead? I bought it at a time where my high school boyfriend and I just started talking about maybe getting married (again, young, dumb, AND impatient lol) but I never wore it for him. Heck I was still paying it off after we broke up. I couldn't give it up. Thoughts? I asked my FH and he just asked if I had ever worn it to get married in before. When I said no, he didn't seem to mind. I do want to see if I can get the sleeves removed and shorten the train (Is that even possible??)

I wouldn't wear a dress that I bought to marry someone else in. I suppose I don't have any logical reasoning, it just doesn't feel right to me. When you bought that dress, no matter how young and dumb you were, you were picturing yourself marrying someone else, not your FH.

I think if you bought it 15 years ago, picturing yourself marrying that other person has beyond left your mind.
If you can find someone to make those alterations for you, I'd say go for it. It sounds like you're changing things so it's not the exact same dress. Because you're not the exact same you that you were when you bought it.

I took it to the dry cleaners and I'm waiting to hear back how much everything will cost. The more I,think about it, the more I love the idea.

See, I'm kinda weird though. Like when I picture me in the dress, I don't think about my ex at all. When I bought the dress I wasn't envisioning me walking down the isle to him, or marrying him, I just pictured what I was seeing in the mirror-me in the perfect dress. I have been married before and I kept it, still have it, and I never think about my ex husband. I wear it most years as a masquerade ball dress for Halloween. I guess I just don't associate stuff like that

Exactly! I love the way you worded that! I never think about him and so much had changed. Right now I'm planning on having the sleeves removed, changing the back from a zipper to a corset, and possibly having the train altered. It doesn't sound like much but I think losing the sleeves changes a lot of the look

I'd wear it. I feel like ok sure you bought the dress for a wedding to someone else but that doesn't change the fact that that is your dress you love and that's for you, ya know? He's not marrying your dress. He's marrying you.
