Ok to ask bridesmaids to not spray tan?

Kelly, on December 11, 2018 at 3:17 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 15

I'm wondering if it is okay to ask your bridesmaids to not spray/airbrush tan before your wedding. I personally hate getting fake tans and I don't think they photograph well so, I won't be getting one even though I have very fair skin. I know one or two of the girls will want to get one because they don't like their fair skin. I don't want to seem overbearing, and I do want them to be comfortable with how they look. However, I'm worried I won't like how it looks having some of us looking very fair next to other people with an unnatural tan.

Since it matters to you, I suggest just requesting that they don't (just don't demand it). Ultimately it is their decision, but you can certainly let them know your preference.

I would let them spray tan if they want to, especially if it’s what they’re comfortable with. And just as an FYI, posts asking if it’s okay to control or decide what people look like at your wedding aren’t usually met with many positive remarks. It’s generally not considered okay, regardless of your intentions.

I would be pretty put off if I was a BM and wanted a more tan look and the bride didn't want me to so I would match the rest of the party more. It's actually a bit offensive if you think about it.

You can't dictate what others do with their bodies. If they like it and will be more comfortable having it done then you should just let them.

I would just leave this alone. If they want a spray tan, let them get one.

I also don’t really understand, so she might not like her photos if everyone isn’t close in shade? That just seems like an odd thing to worry about.

It's not up to you to dictate what your friends do with their own bodies.

Oh jeez, didn't mean to make it sound like I want everyone to look the same! Just that I don't like spray tans.

I've never seen a spray tan photograph poorly unless it's an awful one that turns out comically orange. Every wedding I've been to, the bride got a spray tan. I bed tan instead, but always do prior to being in a wedding. I would let the girls do what makes them happy & comfortable & feel beautiful. I assume if they choose to get one, they will know where to go to get a good one.

I wouldn't tell them not to spray tan, but I do think it would be ok to ask that they are really careful to make sure that it is blended well and that the shade is right. With your wedding being in the spring/almost summer, they will likely want to be tanned if thats something they usually do.

I have had multiple sprays, I have a friend who has a business & she does a good job. She sprays brides all the time & the pics come out amazing. Maybe some people are going to bad places? If you spray like 5 days before a big event you're still tan but not as tan, maybe they can do that if they really want to be tan. Girls stand next to each other all the time that are different colors.., I don't think it would look as bad as you think.

In the grand scheme of things you’ll only have a few pictures of them compared to all the other pictures you’ll have. It’s probably not as big of a deal as you think it’ll be.

I think this is too much. Now a days spray tans are better and aren’t usually orange.
I got a pray tan before my engagement pictures and got nothing but compliments on it! It looked great. I didn’t look orange at all

I've seen girls who bed tan that look way more orange than a spray tan, and that's saying something. I agree that I do not think spray tans are chemically as orange as they used to be. Have you seen them with their tans before? What about it is offputting to you? Do they get multiple layers and it's just too fake looking? I would maybe mention it, but you cannot force them if that is how they prefer to be seen. Maybe just fair warn them not too dark or whatever.

I wouldn't make a big deal about this... if there is one that is notorious for her bad tans then I'm sure she has been told before and probably doesn't care... if this is what makes them feel comfortable then I say let it go...
