Officiant meal?

Heather, on September 1, 2019 at 2:32 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 8
This may be a totally stupid question, but when hiring an officiant, do I ask them their meal choice? Do they typically stay for your reception? Or do they leave when their job is done? I don’t want to be rude and not offer them a plate if it’s expected. But all the weddings we’ve been to, people have had family members officiate, so they were guests as well. What’s the proper protocol for a hired officiant that is not a friend or family member? Do they get offered dinner at your reception? Yes or no?

Typically hired officiants don't stay for the reception. If you want to invite them, they may stay just because it's a free meal, but an invitation isn't expected.

Our officiant was someone we hired through this site. We invited him and his wife to be nice if they wanted to attend. Our officiant thanked us for the offer but declined. Vendors were supposed to get a different meal from everyone at the wedding but they ended up having the buffet anyways. Our venue made the mistake of telling them to go to the buffet and we told them and they said it was fine that they eat from the buffet since they are the ones that told them to go up.

As an officiant I don't stay for the reception unless I am friends with the couple. Your officiant should give you the time they intend to arrive and how long they plan to stay after the ceremony (for pictures if requested).

Did he/she let you know they would be staying? Or did you offer for them to stay?

When we had our final meeting I asked if he was going to stay through the reception and he said yes and that his wife would be joining him if that was okay and of course we said yes

I have the same situation! At my church the officiant always stays for the reception. OP, it's definitely not required of you, but asking is a sweet gesture!
