Odd number of bridesmaids, no groomsmen

C Ko, on March 23, 2023 at 5:04 PM Posted in Planning 0 11
I planned to have 8 bridesmaids for my destination wedding, but unfortunately 5 will not be able to make it so i ll be left with 3, which i dont mind ( i actually love). However, my mom is against it saying that it s better to have an even number; it looks good. I personally don’t care how it looks; to me as long as these are the bmaids i want in my party that s all that matters. Since she gives me no other arguments and wants to get a seat filler, i d like to get some inputs for those who have done it and how did it look? Trying to be open minded and consider the other perspective.

What is a seat filler?! You mean a stranger or someone your mother knows to stand there and pretend to be your friend?

There are bridesmaids for hire. I think they can be hired for anything a bridesmaid might normally do. The most basic is to hire someone for the wedding ceremony. Sometimes it is having someone to help get over nerves before the wedding. And if someone does not have a bridesmaid in mind, this is one option.

I definitely do not recommend what the previous poster suggested. Do not pay or “hire” anyone to be your bridesmaid. There’s not a need for bridesmaids to be “an even number”. People are not props. Simply tell your mom “There will be 3 bridesmaids and that’s fine.”

A distasteful option. A day of coordinator is a far more appropriate choice to help with extra help the day of and with nerves. Actually hiring someone as a prop to walk down the aisle, stand up at the ceremony for the sake of symmetry and appearances, and pretend to be an honored friend is both sad and tacky.

Sure. it would tend to be the last option someone might take. Maybe we will hear back from someone who did that. There may be some reasonable situations for that but not really for the situation in the OP.

I can’t think of any. A bridal party is not a requirement. The only people necessary for a ceremony are the couple themselves and possibly witnesses who do not have to be in the wedding party either.

Yes, like a family friend i did not intend to have in the party, but who will be so the number of bridesmaids is an even number.

Well that doesn't sound like a very nice way to treat someone. I would have an uneven number of people instead. Like, what if you ask this "seat filler" and then someone drops out for whatever reason, you'd be back at 3. Would you ask yet another "seat filler"?

My fiancé and I are planning on having 6 bridesmaids and 6 groomsmen. He’s always wanted to have a country wedding
