Oahu or Maui?

Monica , on March 5, 2017 at 1:26 AM Posted in Honeymoon 0 22

FH and I are looking to plan our honeymoon in September. We are planning to stay 7 nights in either Maui or Oahu. We are leaning more towards Oahu but just wondering if any one has been to either or both of these islands for honeymoon and what is their preference?

My FH and I went to Maui (for vacation not HM). We stayed at the Grand Wailea and it was beautiful. Maui is a smaller island so it's less crowded. We went on a booze cruise, spa at the hotel, road to Hana, mamas fish house, and lounged on the beach. I highly recommend Maui!

Everyone I have talked to that has been to Hawaii before says Maui is better. I've been told Oahu is more city like. Everyone tells me that Maui and Kauai are more what you picture Hawaii to be. So that's where we are going Smiley smile

Maui is more paradise, Oahu is very city. I've been to pearl harbor so don't feel the need or desire to ever go back to Oahu but i'd go to Maui time and again.

We are stopping in Oahu our very last day just to do Pearl Harbor. But other than that we are doing Maui and Kauai

Maui is less crowded, offers both lounging by the beach or activities to fill your day.

I'm from Oahu, but I'd agree, Oahu is definitely more dense with people. If you like the nightlife, then Oahu. But Maui is more country, relaxing. Hyatt Andaz is beautiful, even if you just go there for a sunset dinner. They have the lavender fields, a winery. There's the volcano, Haleakala (take motion sickness pills because it's a long drive and the roads are windy).

I second the Grand Waliea!!! On my trip, I went to both Oahu and Maui. I loved them both for different reasons. We escaped the city and went country side in Oahu and the scenery was beautiful. Some of the touristy things in Oahu are fun to do but not more than like two days. Maui definitely has the paradise feel and better beaches.

I went in October to Kauai and Oahu. We had to go to Oahu to visit the Pearl Harbor memorial, this was very important to us. However, other than that I preferred Kauai. Oahu was expensive and felt like New York. It had a giant super high end shopping block all along Waikiki Beach. If you like those things you'd like Oahu(it wasn't for me). Kauai is peaceful, reasonably priced and rustic. I don't know if you considered Kauai, if not I would suggest researching it. The Napoli Coast is gorgeous and has been used for tons of movies (Jurassic Park), and poipu beach is ranked in the top 10 beaches in America. Lastly, the island is small enough to drive everywhere!!

We are honeymooning in Hawaii as well. We are going to be on Kona most of the time but taking an island hopper over to Oahu for two days mainly to see a couple friends who live there and to see the USS Arizona (pearl harbor) memorial. Oahu is very touristy and not as romantic or slow paced as the other islands.

I never been to Oahu so I might not have the best advice, but I have to say I loved Maui. Although it was a little more.... country/brown than I thought, once you go to the road to Hana or just sit on the beach... it's amazing and breath taking

I do recommend looking into Kauai. That place is simply breathtaking and a lot less people. Definitely more romantic. They have a fun mountain tubing adventure where you sit in an inter tube and float through these old sugar plantation irrigation canals... it was FUN and relaxing. Kauai is definitely more green than Maui was.

I have only been to Honolulu for a few hours. Too crowded and city like to me. I've heard of you go to the other side of the island it's pretty. Maui is the best! I've been there a bunch of times and it never gets old. I love the Napili area. We stayed in Wailea in October and I didn't care for it at all. They have big resorts but the water isn't as clear and it gets windy over there.

Maui is much more romantic. We are getting married there in October. Oahu is more city like, but if you are set on that island, take a trip up to the North Shore where is a bit more relaxed!

Thank you all for the advice! I will share this info with my FH and see what he thinks. I'm definitely thinking Maui may be a better fit for our honeymoon. Is there any hotels or areas you guys prefer in Maui?

I agree with most posts here, it really depends on the kind of experience you are looking for. If you want to go out a lot, walk to dinner/shops, and experience a more lively city-like atmosphere, then Waikiki is the place to be. If you want a more relaxing, serene experience still with plenty of shopping/dining/activities, then I'd go to Maui. We are going to Maui because it's not as crowded as Waikiki but has more to do then Kauai. Either way you'll have a blast!

Maui over Oahu, however I would recommend Kauai. We stayed on the island of Kauai and flew over to Oahu for one day to see Pearl Harbor. One day in Oahu was good enough for us. We couldn't wait to get back to the peaceful island of Kauai.

I lived in HI for a little and still go once or twice a year. IMO Maui is a much better place to visit for a honeymoon than Oahu. If you're adventurers, I recommend Hana or the North Shore. If you're golfers/shoppers, Waikiki or Wailea. If you want the typical honeymoon feel, Kaanapali or Kapalua.

I've been to Maui, Oahu and Kauai. I am glad we went to Oahu and saw Pearl Harbor etc, but I will not go back on my next trip. I'd go back to Kauai and then Maui. Both were beautiful. Oahu is more "city" like. Well, at least around Waikiki Beach.
