Ny/long Island Civil Marriage Ceremony Advice? (steps After nyc Cupid Project?)

Erin, on November 27, 2020 at 10:04 AM Posted in New York Planning 1 6

Hi ladies! Hope everyone is holding up well in this lovely year we are all trying to plan a wedding in. Just this last week, we postponed our December 18th wedding to May 7, 2021. I do not want to postpone marrying my man, though, so we just finally got our appointment to review our marriage application with NYC Project Cupid thing since we can't go in person to get our marriage license.

Side note: For any of you who need to start this process soon, I highly suggest following @NYCClerk on Twitter and setting alerts on their tweets - these appointments book up insanely quick and we just barely got an appointment to REVIEW our application just 4 days before our originally scheduled wedding date. They are all booked up until Dec. 14, which was just released this morning.

Anyway... I now need to figure out how to actually get married since the City Clerk isn't allowing couples to come in person for their actual civil ceremony and I can't wait until my appointment to find out since that isn't even until 4 days before we are planning on legally tying the knot. Their website says all ceremonies need to be done through a private officiant, but I don't even know where to start with finding private officiants during covid. I know I could always google and do the research but was hoping to reach out to any other NYC/Queens/Long Island brides who might have some suggestions or even recommendations for a person/company who I could book a private ceremony with.

*another mention - I do have family members who are lawyers/judges and know a few people who are officiants, but I kind of wanted to keep this super low key and don't really want to have to choose who will marry us from a group of people we know.

Thanks in advance!

Erin

You can check out the vendor tab here on Weddingwire. Thumbtack is another great option for finding an officiant. Hopefully someone can give you a specific recommendation, but these are some other options.

I recommend looking on thumbtack.com to find a private officiant.

Hi Erin - My Husband and I were married this June through NYC Project Cupid! So here's what will happen. At the Application Review Appt the City Clerk person will ask you to review the names / information to double-trouble check names and spellings, they'll ask you to show your NY Drivers License and a Passport or another form of ID to prove you are you, and then you'll receive your marriage license that day via email! I too was a bit confused about finding an officiant and our City Clerk person basically told us to "Google it". So helpful. We ended up going with Judge Marrus with Judges for Love and it was THE BEST choice. We arranged the logistics through his very sweet wife - Iris - and on the day of the event he was so personable and gave the gravity to the moment we thought we couldn't have on a Zoom call Wedding. Our parents are still talking about how wonderful he was. Iris was also very sweet to take pictures of us during the phone call (she took pictures of the screen but they turned out surprisingly well!)

Thank you so much for the tip about following the clerk on Twitter. There weren't any appointments available, but I twitted them and was able to get an appointment in 2 days. We'll be married on Monday. Smiley heart Smiley ring Smiley heart
