nyc Alcohol rules & permits

julia, on March 7, 2018 at 10:45 AM Posted in New York Planning 0 4

Greetings,

Has anyone dealt with providing their own alcohol at their reception in a "raw" space in NYC (specifically Brooklyn) - rather than using a caterers alcohol package? We asked our venue (an historic house run by a non-profit cultural org.) about their rules around alcohol and they replied with this cryptic message: "You have to purchase your own beer & wine. Caterers cannot sale it to you. Delivery of a keg is fine." I've contacted the NY State Alcohol Authority and they were also no help - basically the same answer, but of course that we have to get a beer and wine permit, which are limited to a certain number per year for the venue, and no answer about liquor (it's as if they are being intentionally vague so they can fine us if we throw party they don't like, such as a rave or underground concert). We'd like to hire a friend to serve as bartender and buy the alcohol ourselves (kegs, table wine, and liquor for a couple signature cocktails), and we have 120 guests. Any advice (specifically in terms of NYC liquor / beer / wine permits from those who are planning to have or have used raw spaces) is appreciated!

Liquor wasn't mentioned do not sure it's allowed. instead of email, try call your venue. say you need these questions answered because you don't want to breach contract and need to budget/plan accordingly.

Is your friend a licensed bartender? If so, they might have more knowledge about these types of venues and what's allowed. I have a feeling that it's what you said, the rules are kept intentionally vague to really "get" people that are making a ruckus and that it's really not a big deal. I would assume that only beer and wine are allowed. If they are not a bartender by trade, I would look into hiring someone that is.

Hi there! I was hoping someone would have answered this but I’m wondering what you ended up doing for your wedding? We’re in the same situation and would love the advice!!

We just bought all the booze ourselves and had a friend bartend and didn’t worry about it. I realized the chance that something would happen was zilch and just didn’t worry. We premixed some cocktails and had two kegs, plus people brought their own bottles and let the bartender dole out shots too. Everything was fine. Probably depends on the venue though? Ours was very don’t ask don’t tell when all was said and done.
