NWR(ish): New job & honeymoon plans

Kelsey, on March 14, 2016 at 11:13 AM Posted in Honeymoon 0 12

Woohoo, I just got a new job!

Buuuuut...my fiancé and I have been planning a month long road trip for the honeymoon, which will last for the entire month of September. Since I start at the end of this month I feel like it's plenty of time to let them know, but it is an awful lot of time off. I don't expect paid vacation for it or anything but how do I let my new employer know that I'm going to be gone for so long?

Good luck with that. A month off at a new job is rare.

First off congrats! I just got my offer letter from my new job a week ago.

Do you know how the days off work yet? That plays alot on if you can request. Ask if you get the days off the bat or if you have to accumulate it.

My new job gives me 3 weeks paid vakay 6 sick days and 2 personal days, roughly a month. I don't plan on using it till the summer.

If you've already accepted the job, you should contact them ASAP to let them know about your planned time off. Like you said, they likely won't be able to pay you for the time away but hopefully they can accommodate it.

As a hiring manager, I would be definitely angry that this wasn't brought up during the interview. The hoops I have to jump through to get employees unpaid leave are horrendous. If I only had a few weeks to try to arrange it, it would be easier to fire the employee. I don't even have to give a reason during their first 6 month probationary period. Expect some push back from the new boss.

    First off, congrats!!!!!!!!! Very exciting...

When I've interviewed recently, I let them know upfront that I will be gone 1 week for honeymoon. It doesn't usually bother the employer, however a month is a long time. But I suggest, just let them know ASAP and be honest, honesty is the best policy! Smiley smile

When my SIL got married last year she was able to get 3 weeks off right away for there wedding honeymoon. She just told the employer right before she signed accepting the position that she was getting married and would need time off for the wedding there already booked honeymoon directly after the wedding. I would say you need to let me them know right away because that is alot of time off.

I agree that it's rare to get that much time off, especially as a new employee. You noted you're in the planning stages for your honeymoon. Is there anyway to split that up? Two weeks now and maybe two weeks later?

We're doing a U.S. road trip. Not really any way to split that into two parts.

Splitting up a road trip is never ideal or easy. One option might be to fly to a location, rent a car, drive around and then fly out of another city.

That's a lot of time off at once, for any job, new or otherwise. I would tell them now, and be open to compromising. A month is an incredibly long honeymoon, luckily its a road trip so you can cut where need be without losing money on airfare.

@Jennifer--that is exactly my thoughts as well! Like it would suck if I told them that I'm going on this road trip and they retracted their offer, but would I really want to work somewhere that doesn't care that I have a life? Haha. Work to live, not live to work. Smiley smile

So there are no surprises I would let them know before you sign the offer. I just started a job last week and need 6 weeks off when I have my daughter in June and I told them before I signed my offer and did not want to tell them in the interview because I did not want my pregnancy to be the reason I wasn't hired. They couldn't retract my offer because I am pregnant but I'm not sure if they can retract yours or not because it is only for a honeymoon. Honestly I would consider shortening your honeymoon if this job is really great.
