NWR - when a pawn shop turns down a piece of jewelry

Katie, on October 25, 2017 at 2:26 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 6

Without any back story, today I took a ring to a pawnshop to see if/how much they might pay for it. It wasn't in absolutely stellar condition (though brand new), and I'm not 100% sure if all of it was real. Metal band (not sure if silver or not) and sapphires.

They examined it and then told me they couldn't help me. I wasn't terribly surprised, but I didn't think until I had left that I could/should have asked why. Does anyone know enough about jewelry/pawn shops to give me an answer?

Pawn shops typically won't take jewelry unless it's real gold or platinum.

It has zero trademarks or stamps on it. It's an Etsy purchase that I just realized (several months after the fact, unfortunately) was not what I asked for or expected. I can't get a return on it, because of the time lapse, so I was trying to see if I could get some money back somehow.

@Mrs. Sitzman, so no silver or anything? Only the really pricy stuff?

@BadgerWife that's what I was thinking. I took it to two jewelers yesterday to get their opinion on the metal, and neither was impressed by the ring (for a few reason). So when the pawn shop turned it down too, I figured it just wasn't good quality overall.

If the ring style isn't very popular and the materials aren't inherently valuable, it may not be possible for the pawn shop to make a profit selling it. Have you considered selling the ring yourself on Craigslist or similar? It will take more time, but you'll probably get more money out of it

@CaboBride2018 it's a very modern ring - half eternity with sapphires. It's beautiful, until you notice the issues with it.

I had considered trying to sell it, but it's hard to know the price to put it at if I don't even know what metal it is (since no stamp) or if the stones are real. The seller offered to do an exchange of sorts, which I'd totally be up for if I trusted his jewelry better. I'm debating my options at this point - exchange vs try my luck at selling it.

If it is not marked Sterling or .925, it is not sterling silver.

So, the 'stones' are probably glass or, at best, crystals.

Sorry to say, but really no value to jewelers or pawn shops. Selling it yourself, you may get something for it. Just be honest in description: silver-tone setting set with sapphire-blue stones half-way around.
