NWR: Vasectomy reversal for FH...Anyone's man had one??

Paige, on July 20, 2016 at 4:19 PM Posted in Married Life 0 14

So, my FH had a vasectomy less than four years ago, because he was positive he didn't want anymore kids with his ex-wife. However, we both would love to have a baby together (I have no children biologically). So, we have a consult for the reversal tomorrow morning. I'm wondering if anyone else has had a man in their life have a reversal and if so, what should I expect?!? I've done some research, but I wanted to hear from people who have actual experience with it. How much does it cost, on average? What's the chance of success? How long is the recovery time? Thanks!

DF had one. We've been ttc for 30 cycles (approaching 31 now, Smiley sad ) and no luck, BUT now the infertility is not on his end, it seems to be on mine. Smiley sad

There is a whole board for VRs on Babycenter, check out ttc after a VR over there for lots of doc recommendations and people who have been through it and/are going through it or are still waiting to have it done.

Average cost varies widely, but there is an EXCELLENT doctor in Oklahoma who has a high success rate, and he charges a flat rate, under $3k I think.

My dad had one. No idea on the cost. He spent several days with frozen peas on his crotch in an arm chair. I am uncertain how long it was from vasectomy to reversal but his quality wasn't great. My stepmother did get pregnant my senior year of college but miscarried because of this.

I don't know the cost, but a co-worker's husband had a reversal and they had 2 babies shortly after. ETA-2 separate pregnancies

Danielle, how did a vasectomy reversal cause your step mom to miscarry? She most likely miscarried because of her age. (???)

Sorry I don't have anything to offer other than I know that if it's reversed within 10 years, you have a good chance of conceiving.

@Danielle, your stepmother probably miscarried for one of a number of reasons, age, a pre-existing medical condition, a genetic abnormality in the fetus, or some unknown factor. Vasectomies and VR do not affect sperm quality, only quantity. Things that affect quality: diet, smoking, working in a factory, working in high temperatures, age. Please learn about human reproductive anatomy, it's fascinating.

@mna ... My FH is adamant that we will get a second opinion, if his original doctor doesn't have high hopes or is way expensive. That doctor in OK may be an option. We're in Colorado...we could road trip.

Paige: He may be less than $2000, I don't remember. I know when we were looking, I think he charged like $1800, but I know he increased his rates like last year some, maybe to $2100? He does 4/week though, and that's his sole practice now. DF wanted to go to a local specialist though. His ran around $10,000.

I know a great person you should ask outside of a wedding planning forum:

    Like Mrs. Nicole's comment.

And I wrote my comment in a hurry so it came out poorly worded. Dad was around 40 when it was reversed. So that probably had more to do with the poor sperm quality - deformed and poor motility. It was another 5 years before my stepmom became pregnant, so she was 40 at that time. All those factors came together to make a viable pregnancy pretty unlikely. Long story short they never had children together. What I am not sure on is if other than age the time between vasectomy and reversal affects chances of it going well. I vaguely remember stepmom saying it may not work to reverse it but do not recall why. I mostly remember the recovery time after his surgery.

Website is terrible, but he's the #1 doctor in our area for vasectomies and reversals. He often trains other doctors, and has a great reputation. Read this to get a basic idea, and then talk to your own doctor.

I'm not sure your FH would appreciate his peen biz being blasted across a public forum, especially when his picture is in your avatar. Also, since 90% of us are women, I'm not sure we are the best target audience for your questions.

I would check and make sure you are able to conceive before having him get it reversed. An acquaintance from law school had his reversed for his now wife and they found out afterwards she was unable to conceive.

JenP: most doctors won't do the surgery without checking that first. For us, I've had a child previously. They can't find any reason that I'm not pregnant by now. It's called secondary infertility and can happen to ANYONE.

My husband had it done in OK in March (2 1/2 weeks before our wedding...very long waiting list and cut it way too close in my opinion!) for $1800. It was by far the cheapest we could find and his reviews were amazing. It was well worth the travel (11 hour drive) if we end up being able to conceive. The surgery was a success (live swimmers), but we are not pregnant yet. It hurt him a LOT more than the vasectomy, but then again he is much older now. Only being 4 years out isn't bad either. DH is 16 years out and his worked so our odds were low. Fingers crossed we get pregnant soon!
