Nwr: Sharing a bathroom with your so

Rachel, on June 30, 2021 at 4:57 PM Posted in Married Life 0 26

So I’ll warn you right now that this is waaaay TMI, but it’s something I’ve been feeling really anxious about lately, and I really wanted to get some idea of how other people deal with it. I hate pooping when FH is around! I know, I know, everybody poops. But some people (like FH) somehow manage to do their business while leaving the bathroom smelling as fresh as a warm spring day. I am not one of those people. No, I’m more of what you could call a “heavy hitter” in the stink department. Always have been. An open window or fan helps a little bit, but there’s really NO way to hide what happened in there. You just need to give it a solid 20-30 minutes to air out.

It was easy enough to avoid going in FH’s presence when we started dating, but after we got engaged and moved in together, I knew that gig was up. So the first time I saw him heading to the bathroom right after I blew it up, I warned him “um, you probably don’t want to go in there.” He just laughed and went right in anyways. And then immediately came running back out. He was like “wow, you weren’t kidding!” He wasn’t mean about it or anything (we were both kind of laughing), but I felt suuuuper awkward. Since then I’ve mostly tried to go when he’s not around, but I know that isn’t going to be sustainable forever.

Anyways, I thought it would be helpful to ask how y’all have dealt with this issue, especially for anyone else out there who’s a major stinker like me.

Matches and candles!!! Seriously the smell of a fresh lit match helps greatly. Same with blowing out a handle. Light a candle with a match for double the effect lol.

Have you tried using Poo-pouri (not sure if I spelled it correctly). It’s a spray that you spray into the toilet right before you go that helps contain odors. We always use it in our staff bathroom at work!

I also recommend poo-pourri! It helps a lot to mask the odors. Febreeze helps too.

Both husband and I are stinky, and we only have 1 bathroom. We moved in together about a year into our relationship and have been together for about 8 years now. It just is what it is. If someone blows up the bathroom and the other needs to go, we just tease each other about it occasionally. You'll eventually get less awkward about it.

I am going to third the poo-pourri! I don’t know how it works, but it does! Also, make sure you get an air freshener that is also a neutralizer- and spray it as soon as you go in there, before you do your business.

So I've seen the ads for Poo Pourri (so funny!) but I haven't tried it yet because for me, at least, freshener sprays usually just make the whole situation even more unpleasant. I know Poo Pourri works differently by going directly on the water, so maybe it's worth a try. Anyone know how well it works for big stinkers?

Poopourri 100%. A spritz or two in the bowl before you go and you won’t smell anything. It’s not a typical freshener, I don’t remember exactly how it works but it’s like the spray seals the smell under the water lol. Try it!

Poo Pourri definitely helps (though it doesn't necessarily cure *everything*).

You will get used to it, though, and he will too - and it will become less awkward as you keep living together.

I’ll also chime in for Poo-Pourri although every scent I’ve tried of theirs is kinda unpleasant to me (better than the alternative of course, but I feel like they are a bit overpowering, like I just breathed in after spraying a bunch of cleaning chemicals). But yes it def makes a huge difference even for really strong odors!

I also have something called “Numero Deux” (LOL) that you use the same way as Poo-Pourri. It comes in a pretty glass bottle so it looks nicer if you want to leave it out in your bathroom i.e. for guests, and it actually smells good - but of course, doesn’t do as good a job covering up the smell (though it definitely helps). I’ve also used “MASK” spray (Teakwood & Tobacco scent), again a nicer smell IMO than Poo-Pourri and it so helps but is not quite AS effective. Using Poo-Pourri before you go and one of these other two afterwards could work, or if you end up not minding the Poo-Pourri scents you are probably good to go just with that.

As a fellow major stinker, I hear you on the embarrassment factor when someone goes right after you. I have both poo-pourri and febreeze that I utilize, but at the end of the day, I think I eventually just got over it. We only have one bathroom currently and at this point, it just is what it is. Still not my favorite thing for him to experience, but it’s not changing at this point, so I think I’m just more comfortable with it.

My fiance and I also have one bathroom! We'll just ask if the other person needs it before we go and stink it up, so no one has to deal with the smell afterwards

I 100 percent agree with poo-pori, the pre poop spray. Fortunately we have three bathrooms and I keep each bathroom stocked at all times with poo-pori even though my hubby just uses bleach...lol (he doesn't realized he's actually helping keep the toilet clean too). Somewhat related...I work in a four person office, 3 ladies and one man, two bathrooms and for years I just could not "go" when I had to "go-go", so I would walk the few feet across the street to a chicken place and "go-go" under the guise of picking up lunch...lol. When poo-pori came on the scene, it was a game changer for me at the office and I keep at least the ladies fully stocked at all times. Thanks for letting me share this. 😁

Poo-pouri as pp suggested. I’m no light weight myself in that department, but when FH and I started living together we both just got over it. Humans poop. Bodies make noises. What are you gonna do? He was awkward at first as well but I just told him we all have “moments”! Lol!

This is the best post on WW! I love that we can all come together on this one topic and help a girl out.

    Poopouri for the win.

My FH has a condition, and as a young child had several inches of his colon removed and he's always had horrific movements where it can really clear the whole house out after he's done.

Poo-pourri does a wonderful job of covering. Literally the first time we used it I was astounded.

That being said, we have a master suite, and so the bathroom he most frequents is in our bedroom, which means if he goes right before bed, the odor fills our bedroom up.

Your FH will get used to the smell, and while once in a while it may be a particularly bad day and they'll comment on it, overall it just becomes part of life. I've been with FH for 4 years, and while I do not love the smell he leaves behind, I've gotten used to it. Yours will get used to yours, so try not to let that stigma that comes with women pooping get to you too much.

Sounds like I definitely need to give Poo-Pourri a try. Even if it doesn't totally eliminate the stink I think it would help me be more comfortable (and I'm sure FH will appreciate it too). Thanks for the recommendation!
