NWR-Removing stains when dry cleaner didn't

Laura, on August 30, 2013 at 1:28 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 11

I need some help over here, I have some food stains that the dry cleaners couldn't get out of my dry clean only clothing. These aren't serious stains, its like water/coke/cookies from a wedding. Whats the secret way to remove these that the dry cleaners doesn't know?

Google it...but white vinegar, hairspray, contact solution, seltzer...depends on what the stain is and what it is on. (Can you tell I spill a lot of stuff?)

Oops - read that wrong! NOT serious. I was wondering how bad a cookie stain could be.

My Grandma had a trick for getting tough stains out. Pull the garment tight across the sink, and pour hot water over it from a good height. Somehow, the combo of heat & force of the water cleared the stain.

I know! And I don't know how they got there, because at this wedding once they took the food away I stopped eating, had no stains, and an hour later I noticed these stains everywhere. Where did they come from?!

@Jennifer I tried google, and everything says go to the cleaners to have them remove it, which I did, and they didn't. Smiley sad And it's not a serious stain like wine that the cleaners had trouble with. I found one suggestion of steaming it out with a towel that I'm going to try after work.

Did you lean against the sink in the ladies' room?

I have taken clothing back to the dry cleaner and said "You didn't get out these stains, try again." I'm sure they know more "secrets" than we do.

If the clothing is dry clean only, I would not try anything else. Well, maybe Woolite, if it is silk.

@Nancy, they left little tags on the hangers which I discovered once I actually got them home saying they need heavier cleaning done. I do remember getting water splashes from the bathroom sink since they were so low.

I would go back to the dry cleaner. The chemicals that they used on it can react to anything you might put on it now and make it worse.

@MJ I believe the dress is polyester, while the skirts are polyester blends that can be washed.

I guess I'm going back to the cleaners tonight.

I would go back to the cleaners first but if they are polyester I would get the dry cleaning sheets that you can use at home and see if those won't take it out. I would make sure that they were out with the sheets first before I put them in the dryer bag though. I even washed my daughters wedding dress. Hot water takes out chocolate. Coldwater or peroxide take out blood. Juice stains you pour boiling water through them. Just a general cleaner or jeans or anything awesome orange is at dollar tree. My son-in-law's pants were washed and dried three times, We put awesome orange On then scrubbed it in a little bit and wash them and the grease came out.
