NWR: old wives tales

Trixie325, on March 10, 2016 at 8:06 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 41

We all have them! One of my family's is, the first time you see a Robin bird during the year it's a sure sign of Spring conning and to make a wish... another is that it's bad luck to put shoes on a bed or table. What are some of your favorites/ones you live by?

I've heard of don't let toddlers sweep your house because that will bring unwanted visitors. I've also heard never open an umbrella inside of your house that brings bad luck.

Don't put your purse on the floor because you will remain broke.

Cardinal is a loved one visiting you from heaven. Never open an umbrella inside. I know there are others but I am blanking, coffee hasn't kicked in yet.

When you move into a new house, the first things you should bring into it are a new broom, a loaf of bread, a box of salt, and a bag of sugar. The broom is to keep your new house clean. It is considered very bad luck to bring an old broom into a new house. The loaf of bread is be sure there will always be food on your table. The box of salt is to bring flavor to your cooking. The sugar is to ensure you will have a sweet life. This old wives tale can be seen in one of the scenes in It's a Wonderful Life, when George Bailey and his wife bring gifts to a family moving into their first home financed by Bailey Building and Loan.

I'm corny, when my necklace back or whatever it's called is to the front I always make a wish and turn it to the back, same with an eyelash. Every Christmas my grandmother has this wives tale to put a bird in your Christmas tree for luck, and burn a Bayberry candle till it burns out Christmas eve for luck.

My parents used to tell us not to sing at the dinner table or we'd marry a crazy man.

I've heard something about not putting shoes on the table, that's a big no-no. Couldn't tell you why though.

My grandma always tells me not to put my pocketbook on the floor, that you will be broke! She also use to get mad if we whistle in the house, she use to say we were inviting the devil in. This one is great, do not buy your partner shoes because they will walk out of your life. Um yeah!

Bad luck to put a hat on a bed or to rock an empty rocking chair.

My purse is frequently on the floor -- maybe that's why I'm not rich!

ELK, didn't you sing "Happy Birthday" at the table? We always did --- hmmm, that might explain some things, LOL!

MoonRide, there are gators in our neighborhood, but our house is built on a concrete slab. Wheww.

Paint the outside of your front door red so prosperity can find you. Where's my paintbrush?

@Elk That made me lol. Explains a lot, actually.

My grandfather used to say it was bad luck to leave by a different door than you entered.

An appropriate poem! "Superstitious" by Shel Silverstein:

If you are superstitious you’ll never step on cracks.

When you see a ladder you will never walk beneath it.

And if you ever spill some salt you’ll thrown some ‘cross your back,

And carry’ round a rabbit’s foot just in case you need it.

You’ll pick up any pin that you find lying on the ground,

And never, never, ever throw your hat upon the bed,

Or open an umbrella when you are in the house.

You’ll bite your tongue each time you say

A thing you shouldn’t have said.

You’ll hold your breath and cross your fingers

    Walkin’ by a graveyard,

And number thirteen’s never gonna do you any good.

Black cats will all look vicious, if you’re superstitious,

But I’m not superstitious (knock on wood).

Don't cross the silverware... My grandma always said it was bad luck. Even seeing other people's crossed for example at a restaurant really bothers me.

My mom would get so angry if we put our shoes on the table, or even a chair!

Also, not eating the last of something, or you'll be an old maid. I was at a cocktail hour, and the server only had one app left on his tray. I refused, and when my friend asked why, an older attorney we were talking to exclaims, "because she wants to get married! I know that one, too!" FH proposed a couple of weeks after that...

My dad's grandma always made he and his brothers split and share one Apple on Easter Sunday morning. It is supposed to bring good health throughout the year. So growing up he always had my sisters and I do the same and I plan to carry on the tradition with my fiancé and my family someday!
