NWR: Odd question?: purchasing baby stuff before pregnant/exactly trying

Finally mrs.jkr, on July 18, 2015 at 10:20 PM Posted in Married Life 0 22

I'm just thinking of the future and making having a baby more affordable. A lot of the cost of a baby (other than the medical stuff, but we have some rockin insurance) is the start-up stuff, especially since we live off of one income now (so no difference) and are happy though on a humble budget with a bit of wiggle room... Which will change when DH gets his teaching license (thus can get a better paying job) in a year and a half. So does it make sense to start trying to find great deals on big purchases (we're planning on probably buying used so we can get those uber expensive excellent quality items). We're not wanting to try until it's only 1/2 year until his license, is it terribly weird to buy baby stuff before you're trying if you come across an amazing deal?

I guess it's fine if you have room for it. We didn't have room to store stuff like a crib and dresser and such until it was needed. I also felt like it was almost a "jinx." It was difficult for us to get pregnant and I think I would have had an ever harder time emotionally if I had to look at an empty crib on a regular basis. I didn't even buy a onesie until I was about 7/8w.

I would wait until you get a positive reading on the pregnancy test. You are wise to consider buying second hand nursery furniture. I can't tell you how many amazing pieces of furniture I've gotten at estate sales and through Craigslist (I don't buy upholstered items -- only hard goods). You can get new Walmart stuff for the same price as used upscale pieces. Here's a clue -- shop Craigslist in upper middle income areas. You will see gorgeous nursery suites being sold for a fraction of their retail cost (spring for a new crib mattress -- always). Once you know you're pregnant, you'll have months to shop. If you want to start early, start by putting money aside. That way, when you see someone selling a Bellini nursery (or something comparable) that their wealthy parents purchased, you'll be the first one there with cash. Educate yourself as to what companies produce the high end stuff (it will last forever, and some of the cribs can be converted to youth beds. You can always keep the other pieces even if you change the bed). If you don't want dark wood pieces for a daughter, wait until you know the gender. There is so much out there -- beautiful layettes and furniture -- and the only trick is being the first one there with the cash.

I would wait. Stuff like car seats and strollers change get taken off the market or updated for safety reasons all the time. If you don't get pregnant right away, it could be out of date. Anything that is on the market now and when you actually need it will be cheaper by then, not more expensive. If you're worried about it, start a savings account just for that and start putting extra money into it.

You will be ok to wait until you are pregnant. They have so many sales on baby items. Amazon has amazing sales if you watch for them. Also what I did was buy clearance clothes after the season ends. If you have targets near you they send all of their clearance when it teaches the max discount to good will.

I agree with the others. I would just start putting money back for your bigger items. I have always heard it is bad luck to by for baby until you are over the miscarriage stage. I had a friend who wanted a baby really bad. She got pregnant and had a miscarriage. Her whole nursery was completed before she lost the baby though and she had a really tough time walking by the nursery every day. Her and her husband went though thousands of dollars to have another baby and ended up with twin boys years later. Besides what you buy now you might not like when you are actually pregnant because there may be something you like better. They come out with cute baby stuff all the time.

I would wait. I have 2 friends who have been trying to get married for 9 and 6 years and they haven't had any luck. The ones who have been trying for 9 years just started a hormone treatment to try and boost whatever it is that they need to boost.

I would wait. My stepmom had my youngest bro at 34 and they were really trying the yr leading up to the pregnancy no only did she lose 25 lbs (as to void being big post pregnancy) she clipped coupons. She did major hauls once she was pregnant and was able to get enough diapers for a year. So hold off there ia little stuff you can do to prepare like find something small to cut from expenses or earn a tad side money. A $40 a month savings could be a huge help 2 yrs from now when the baby is bron.

If you have the funds available now, I'd suggest investing them (in a low risk/low interest account) so that you can make money off of it now.

I'd put the money aside now, but not buy stuff. Even once you get pregnant, you'll have most of a year to find good deals. And if it takes you some time to get pregnant, or you have a miscarriage, or you can't get pregnant at all, having a bunch of baby stuff around the house will be profoundly depressing.

When we decided to start trying, we started looking at all the big ticket items (crib, changing table, strollers, car seats and diapers) Once we became pregnant, we started putting money aside for those items. We went to Target, JCP, Macy's and Baby's R Us and purchased gift cards. Every pay period, we put at least $100 on each card. Two months before the twins were born, we had enough money to purchase all of the big ticket items. We registered for all the incidentals (lotion, baby oil, powder, onesies and diapers) We still have those cards and put $50 per month on them for just in case.

We are expecting our twins in a few weeks. I'd say it's fine if you want to start setting aside a little money, but don't get too far ahead of yourself. Wait to purchase things. Great deals on baby stuff happen all the time. I get at least. 8 store emails every day about sales and Craigslist always has treasures. Also, people come out of the woodwork and are very generous. Much more so than we ever could have anticipated... Most of the big stuff was gifted (car seats, double stroller, rock 'n play sleepers, etc.). Various friends sent boxes of baby clothes. We won't have to buy ANY clothes until they grow out of size 18 months. We have more receiving blankets and hooded towels then we could ever use and a closet full of diapers. I know you're a planner. Just focus on the money piece. If you need a baby fix before then, you're welcome to come over to our place once the tator tots make their debut.

Ditto what others have said, you are fine to wait / put $ aside but don't purchase items. One thing I didn't see mentiond - some babies need a specific brand diaper because they get rashes from certain ones.

TBH I've bought some baby clothes when it's been too cute but I agree--save for the big ticket items. If you have trouble conceiving it will be hard to look at on a daily basis.

I have a rather large box of baby stuff that I have gotten over the years. No big ticket items though (except what my sister has been giving me as she finishes with it). We are not TTC for a another few months though.

I would wait until you are actually pregnant. Put money aside in a bank account you don't touch. Things with babies go out of style SO fast and some things actually expire (like car seats). I know you want to break up the money spent, but it's better to wait. Someone will always be selling good stuff used. Our friend use a registry for their baby that was able to let us know that buying that item used was okay with them. I thought that was awesome to have that! Because why buy a $200 stroller when the same one in good condition is $35 on a FB selling site? So yeah, just wait and start putting money aside now.

Start building a baby savings account instead! There will always be good deals and used items to buy. You may also want a newer model in 1-2 years. Just save the cash and wait for the go-ahead from your doctor before you officially get all your baby stuff. Good luck!!

Money in the bank earns more interest than a pile of baby furniture and accessories.

I agree to save the money. Besides the obvious, baby product recommendations are constantly changing, and you definitely will want the most current/safe recommendations once you get closer. Also, it is amazing what ppl will buy for you once you're actually pregnant and its time for your shower--you don't want to get too much that ppl don't even have a chance to help out.

I would not actually buy stuff yet. I am far too superstitious for that.
