NWR; my dog broke his metatarsal :(

Amanda, on October 9, 2016 at 12:48 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 10

My bridal shower was today so my dad generously took my dog Weenie to the vet for me when I noticed he was limping around and his paw was swollen. Turns out his metatarsal is broken in 3 places in his left hind leg! We have no idea how this happened, but we suspect that it might be from running down the stairs VERY fast and hard, plus he has gained 10lbs after he was on steroids for an infection. However, the vet did not put him in a cast or give him a splint; he said it will just heal on its own. I'm worried that without immobilizing it he could injure it further. The poor pup had to be given morphine before he would even let the vet look at it. He's been hopping around on 3 legs for the last day or two, and we have some pain medicine for him, but I just hope it heals. My poor baby! He's a big eater but he's so doped up right now he can barely figure out how to chew. :-(

Aww, poor baby. If the vet thought he needed some kind of splint or cast, he would have put on on. If he doesn't get better in the next couple of weeks, take him back in. I hope he feels better soon!

Casts for dogs suck! My vet overreacted and put one on my dog after he fractured his pinkie toe when he was attacked by two pittbulls (my dog is a jack Russell, so it was a very unfair, and unprovoked fight). He had the cast on for two weeks before it rubbed his leg raw and gave him a skin infection. We ended up doing bed rest the last 4 weeks of treatment, and I wish we had done bedrest the whole time. The cast was a pain too because you have to keep it clean and dry, which is hard with pottying outside and when dogs sweat through their paws.

If you have a crate, I highly recommend leaving your dog in it for most hours of the day. Take him out to pee and eat and snuggle (lots and lots of snuggles). When you do this, keep him on a leash and tethered to you to reduce movement and temptation to run around.

I'm so sorry you're going through this. I really truly know how heartbreaking and stressful it is. Sending positive internet thoughts your way.

Yeah, we often don't splint those metatarsal fractures because they heal just as well without annoying the dog with a splint. Sometimes splinting is appropriate, but we're always thankful when it isn't needed!

Awww poor thing ! My friend has a grey hound that can run extremely fast, and my poor lab tried to keep up and pulled a muscle in his shoulder. Broke my heart! For like a week he was limping around.

It's never easy to watch a poor helpless animal be injured.

Just show your baby some love!
