NWR: Medical ID Bracelet

Jaimee, on May 6, 2017 at 2:12 PM Posted in Fitness and Health 0 11

So, I decided to invest in a medical alert ID because I had a health episode two weeks ago that did NOT go well. My condition involves episodes of vasovagal syncope and when you faint at a concert, it's just assumed you're loaded or on something, even when you come to and try to inform them otherwise (upside face emoji).

Anyways, attached is my bracelet. It has been said that it doesn't really stand out and might get overlooked if another episode happens. I don't think so, but I am open to purchasing a new plate for it if need be, with the symbol in red.

Does it look unnoticeable? Should I invest in a new plate? It's my first medic alert bracelet, so I'm not used to being treated with one on during a medical event.

I'm not sure if others have one on here, or have treated anyone with one if in the medical field, but I figured I'd give it a go in asking.

Again, I'm totally open to changing the plate if needed! Smiley smile

There is a web site called Lauren's hope that you can get some really bridal looking bracelets for your present plate. Although I think enough people are around you on your wedding day that you are not going to have to actually wear it but def put it back on the next day.

I've spoken to an EMT who said that they usually look at a person's wallet to see if they have a medical ID or paper rather than look for a bracelet. They also recommended a necklace instead of a bracelet because generally that is more noticeable when they are taking a person's vitals. As a side note, Etsy has some great bracelets and necklaces for medical ID's.

@Svetlana, that's where I ordered my bracelet! Smiley smile I plan on purchasing from them again for something to wear on my wedding day, if my current purchase doesn't go with my dress. I have the black dress versus white/ivory debate on a daily basis. Thankfully, I have some time to figure it out.

@Rachel, I think a teen did find me first; she seemed really young, at the very least. She wasn't staff, though! Just a concert-goer. She was really sweet and offered to help me to the bathroom, but I told her I just needed to sit. She helped me up off the floor and helped me brush myself off.

Event staff didn't approach me until I fainted a second time. I got up too fast and fainted on the chair I got to. I heard the staff who witnessed the second one say she saw me faint the first time, but thought I just tripped and was fine.

My friend and I tried to explain I had a condition, but they assumed I was drinking and not owning up to it, which is fine, I get it; I'm just trying to take the steps to not have that confusion again.

Definitely looking into the necklace Smiley smile

I think it's noticeable. I have a medic alert bracelet but I don't wear it anymore. It broke so I just tucked into my wallet so it is in front of my drivers license. I need to replace mine, I don't always have my wallet on me.

I am an EMT and maybe it is my military background, checking dog tags, but I think the necklaces are much more noticable for responders.

I think your bracelet is much more noticeable than the one DH used to wear right after his T1D diagnosis. The darn thing broke and he never replaced it because he wants to get a fancy watch that would have a USB with his medical records on it. I think we're approaching two years without a medical alert tag because he can't decide what he wants and won't just get a simple one in the interim.

I appreciate the advice you're getting about an alert necklace bring more effective. Maybe I can get DH a Flava Flav style clock necklace and slap a USB on the back of it for him. Engraved with the proper alert symbol and diagnosis, of course.
