I'm currently sitting with my family on a picnic blanket as we eagerly wait for the ceremony to start. That's the part that surprised me- there are no chairs! People are expected to bring their own chairs or blankets and sit on the ground.

My own high school graduation was held in a stadium. All the parents dressed up and everyone had a seat.

Am I crazy for feeling like this event is unusually informal? Or is this normal for high schools and I'm confusing it with the formality of college graduations?

I'm a school photographer so this time of year I'm constantly at different schools for graduations. In all the years I've worked for this company I've never seen people have to bring their own chairs. Congrats to your sister!!

That's weird. Mine was in our stadium (outdoors) and my little sister's was in a theater.

Everything about my hs and undergrad program was formal. I went to all girls school for both. White dress over the blue gown at both schools. Now at Ursuline you are permitted to decorate your cap if you want. they were both indoors at the performing arts centers. Each grad received 4 tickets to graduation which for some was a major stressor.

Ours was held on the football field, and everyone sat in the bleachers. Not crazy formal, but people still dressed semi-formal. (Think a nice maxi dress, or a cute sundress with wedges.)

Speaking of which, FBIL is graduating next week and I need to find a dress to wear...

That's odd. My high school graduation was held at a college in our hometown and guests were in dresses, shirts and ties.

Interesting. My nephew graduated earlier this week and it was formal. I've NEVER heard of anything like this before.
