What kinda of products are our must haves for your dogs/puppies? And preferred kennels, food, grooming tools, etc? Any tried and true training tips? H and I are getting a new four legged member of the family soon and I'd love to hear your recommendations!

Anyone have any tips for daytime potty breaks?

I work full time, Mon-Fri, but only 4 days a week, H works Thurs- Monday and has school T/Th from 8 to 12, so he's gone from about 7 to 1. There may be 2 days during the week, someone won't be home most of the day, those days I can take an hour break, as I work close to home.

We don't want to train for puppy pads, but there may be a couple days we can't get home every 2-3 hours to take pup out.

Pup will be about 10 weeks when we bring it home.

ETA: We know pup will have at least one set of shots when we pick up and will get to the vet ASAP for set two, but will taking them out to go potty without at least 2 sets of shots be possibly harmful to them? We don't want parvo!

Socialization, socialization, SOCIALIZATION! A puppy class with a dog trainer will be your best investment.

One thing I was surprised about was conflicting advice from the breeder, vet, dog trainer. Our breeder was against some of the vaccines that our vet strongly recommended. Same thing goes for raw diet, we were given conflicting info. Take what everyone says into account, do your own research and then make your own decision.

We got our dog a Casper dog bed and she loves it! I would probably wait until your pup is potty trained though. Kong toys are nearly indestructible. Definitely have a good vacuum! Enjoy your new puppy!

I highly doubt youll have any issues with illness like parvo before all their shots are given as long as you aren't taking them to the park and daycare, etc....just avoid being around dogs that you don't know. However- they can be around other dogs that you KNOW are vaccinated prior to completing their shots. its just like human babies...

Take them potty in quiet areas and away from other dogs if possible.

Gold- do you have any issues with your baby's anal glands? Are they big enough to express themselves, or do you have to do it/get it done every so often?

I can do it externally if need be, but hey if they are big enough to do it themselves, even better!

We have spoiled our dogs with BarkBox subscriptions. They have really good treats for pups and their toys seem to hold up really well!

Gold- Good to know. I'll probably look into getting some cheap clippers for "clean up" then. Luckily I worked in a grooming salon, so i have plenty of practice.

You're gonna be my new best friend for awhile lol We don't know anyone else with a corgi.

    3-4 weeks!

They were about 5 weeks when we got pictures over a week ago, so around the 9-10 week mark we get to make the long ass drive to go meet/pick out our pupper!

We wanted to go meet them before but the breeder doesn't want any risk of parvo and they don't have any shots yet, so we have to be patient.

We have a 3 year old and 1 year old, both were puppies when we got them. Patience is a virtue! They are cute and snuggly but will drive you mad and use their puppy eyes like currency and get out of jail free cards.

Firstly, puppies chew everything! We had to constantly watch our dogos. Our first dog only chewed wood, but we made the mistake of putting our second dog on the bed, only to find out he liked to chew comforters! There are some natural deterants from chewing furniture you could try, but we mediated the habit by closely watching them and correcting their behavior.

For potty training, a schedule is everything. Also, take them out directly after waking up, eating and drinking. If they have an accident in the house don't scold them after the fact, just clean it up and take them out. If they're scolded after the fact they could associate using the bathroom around you as wrong, which will set back your training.

For obedience, know your dog. I took my second dog (blue heeler) to obedience classes. Their breed is very smart and needs stimulation, but my trainer trained using intimidation and force - I quit after 3 classes. His method made my dog snap at me, we took him home and tried different methods, and were able to teach him a new command in 15 minutes. Also, know what motivates your dog. My first dog is not toy or food motivated - she likes praise. Our second dog is food and toy motivated, but food makes him lose focus, so we use toys.

For food we use Wellness Simple. My first dog has very dry skin, and gave herself many hotspots, so we limit her grain intake, which has really helped! The food is pricier than most, but is rated extremely high compared to other brands like Blue Buffalo. For treats, I either buy grain free, or make my own. Pinterest has so many quick treats that are better for your dog - their favorite is homemade frosty paws! A simple PB treat recipe is also great for making trainer treats if needed (echoing PP, check the PBs contents - some sugars are very harmful to dogs, I use all natural PB).

Lastly, I think I saw you mention corgi breed, Both my dogs have satellite dishes for ears. My first dog gets frequent ear infections from swimming and everyday dogo-ness. We just make sure to clean their ears if we notice they get water in them or get them dirty, or start shaking their head alot. They hate it but it helps save a vet visit! You can buy a regular ear rinse from your local store.

If you go to Petco get their rewards card! It's free and totally worth it.

Thanks the D- I may have to see if our neighbors/parents may be willing to break up the day for potty breaks on days neither one of us are home. At most pup will be alone for about 4 hours but that may be too long in the beginning.

Definitely invest in obedience training! It is well worth the money. Start as a puppy.

Crate training is HIGHLY recommended. It's a safe place for a puppy to be when you are away and then they can't get into/chew/destroy anything they are not supposed to.

I like wag.com or Amazon for supplies. I'd skip the pee pads. Just can form bad habits.

When Bailey was a puppy, we had a dog walker. Is there someone in your area?

With potty training, consistency is key.

    my doxie babes!

Bailey (isabella) is almost 13 and Reese (black & tan) is almost 15!

    I'm so excited for you.

    - A good harness for walking.

Some of my favorite products for dogs.

    - A high quality food. Acana/Orijen for kibble, Open Farm for kibble. Primal or Stella and Chewy's for raw. Merrick or Weruva for wet. Avoid grocery store brands. They tend to be very high in carbs and can cause weight gain. Watch for allergies to chicken and beef. Lots of paw licking and biting can indicate an allergy.

    - Chews. Once he/she is older bully sticks are great. I also love No Hide chews. They are raw hide free.

    - Toys...anything by GoDog and hugglehounds. There are also treat puzzles that you can hide treats in and have them find them.

Bowls- Slow feeders are great. Corgis love to eat and these bowls help them slow down and not ingest as much air.

Supplements- Honest Kitchen Bone Broth for glucosamine. Good for joints. Primal Goats Milk for probiotic or Honest Kitchen Goats milk. Plaque Off is great to add to food. Helps soften the plaque on teeth pair that with a good chew.

Bobbi Panter makes amazing shampoos for dogs. Stinky Dog is my favorite.

    I think that's it.

FMR- we're gonna have to use my cat harness for pup at first ( my cat is a 16 pound fat-ass so he has a small dog harness) and once pup outgrows that one, we'll get a bigger one.

Gold- would those work as training treats? or do you use turkey or something like that?

FH and I love Chewy.com for any supplies for our Australian Shepherd, Ziggy. The ferminator brush is absolutely amazing - I highly recommend it! Aside from supplies, its really important to work with your dogs and stimulate them not just physically, but mentally as well! I have never done professional training with Ziggy, I work with him myself. We got him at a year and a half and he wasn't even housebroken. Now you wouldn't even guess he was the same dog with all the tricks he can do!

Gold- You're seriously my new favorite person!

ETA: we have a smaller harness *I think* from when he fit in actual cat harness. His harness is a small dog harness right now

Everyone, I love the tips! I've worked with dogs and had a dog growing up but this is my first furbaby on my own (with H's help of course) so I guess i'm a little nervous I'll have a crazy psycho pup!

YAY!! So exciting! Head over to Ruff Beginnings Rehab on youtube & facebook, I watched many of her videos when we got our pup & learned tons! Highly recommend threshold training from her, my dog doesn't pass through the front & garage doors without permission, talk about great when worrying about a puppy bolting out the door!

Amazon Basics has TONS of pet supplies for a good price, we got our kennel & multiple beds from there (he's a very spoiled pup!)

Try using kibble for training! If your puppy is getting 2 cups of kibble a day, use a cup of that for training!

Absolutely take some training classes with your pup once able to, but stay consistent working with the pup even when not taking classes!
