NWR: Kinda TMI, Ladies with Mirena, i Need advice

MrsM., on August 29, 2014 at 10:03 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 10

So yesterday I noticed my Mirena string is longer than usual. I'm kinda freaked out. I've had it in about a year and half. I'll admit I havent been as good at checking it, so it's possible its not the first time it has shifted, and I know your cervix shifts during your cycle, but I've never noticed this before. Does this happen to anyone else?

There's no pain, which from what Ive read is if it is coming out, it will basically hurt like it did when it was inserted...And I dont feel the IUD.

I need to see a doctor, i know. I just dont have health insurance right now and would like to wait if at all possible

I have the mirena and I have never felt my strings. I don't know if this depends on the person or not but mine is too far in me (for lack of a better explanation) to feel the strings. I know my gyno cuts them short though so they don't bother me so maybe that helps?

Every case is different but something similar happened to me and mine actually shifted and I ended up getting pregnant on it. You can wait a few days and see what happens but I would be really safe when having sex until you know if it's dislodged

My doctor left mine a bit longer so that they would curl up around my cervix instead of being too short and pointy. So I don't ever feel them. I agree that you would be in pain if something was wrong. Maybe wait a day or two and then call your doctor if there is a problem?

I'm not sure where you are, but where I live we have something called TeleHealth Ontario, it's a free phone line that you can call and talk to nurses to sort of triage your symptons, before going to the doctor. Would there maybe be something like that in your area?

I had a Mirena for the full time (5 years) and replaced it in December last year with another one. I have never checked my string.

There was an incident about a year ago where FH bumped it with his fingers (TMI but relevant, sorry!) and it hurt like a muthafucka! I cramped the rest of the weekend. I was really paranoid it was bumped out of place or something so I went to my Dr. and she checked it out and said it was all good!

Like most of the women above, my strings are short, but I think you would feel something if it was coming out. Since you don't have insurance right now, maybe try Planned Parenthood? I think some PPs do a sliding scale based on your income. It also might be a good idea to ask them to do an ultrasound. Drs can look and feel for the strings, but an ultrasound can give a clearer picture (literally) of how your Mirena is placed in your uterus. Good luck!

IUds typically shift during the first few months after insertion and stay put after that. See a dr as soon as you can (planned parenthood? Zoomcare?) and use an alternate bc method until then. Good luck!

My sister had a BIG problem with hers! I can't remember the details, but she had to have it surgically removed.

My OB keeps mine short. I've never felt them. She always checks them at my yearly exam. I haven't had a cycle in over a year so I don't know about any shifting, I've had it 3 years in February

The weird thing i find about this thread is the ladies who said you've never felt them - mirena explicitly states to check them once a month to make sure it is in place and functional .... So ladies as a health student I would be checking those strings regularly short and long!

To op- try planned parenthood at least they may ease your mind? I've never noticed a change in length but I haven't paid that much attention to it honestly

I've had my Mirena since December 2015, and I can kind of tell it's there when I cramp (seeing the uterus is a muscle and all) so I made an appt with my gyno, they gave me a vaginal ultrasound and all was well! It never hurts to check with the doc, especially when there can be major complications if it gets out of place, or embedded, or with pregnancy while having Mirena inserted.
