NWR: Keratin Treatment?

Colleen, on December 4, 2015 at 10:09 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 18

Ladies I have curly/wavy hair and am thinking of getting a Keratin treatment. My coworkers rave about it but I'm not 100% sold. Do you love yours? Any cons? Wedding in 4 months so it will be out of my hair by then as I'm having my hair curly for the wedding.

I haven't had one but I have naturally curly hair that I blow out and use a flat iron on every two + days. I asked my stylist about those and she said they're great but something to consider is its a bit awkward as your hair grows out. The top gets curly and the bottom is straight.

I've heard mixed reviews. I wouldn't try it, even if it's supposed to be out, before the wedding. If your hair is damaged, it may not be healed by the wedding. I also have very curly hair, and wanted to wear it curly for the wedding. My stylist actually still curled my hair rather than use the natural curl. It made the style look more formal and the curls were more defined. That's just my 2 cents.

I get regular Keratin treatments and I loooove them. I have very thick hair that is naturally wavy and VERY frizzy. Keratin treatments are freakin' miracle workers for the frizz but still leave my hair a bit wavy with a lot of body (not like Japanese straightening treatments that leave your hair pin straight).

I used to flat iron my hair straight every morning but now just blow dry it and go. Added bonus is that keratin-treated hair dries faster, too.

Also: my hair still holds a curl perfectly fine if I use a curling iron or blow it out curly for a special event.

My mom does it. She LOVES it and raves about it. Her hair looks amazing. It's also allowed her to grow it out for the first time in forever because she can get past the awkward stage and not look like she has a fro. She does the one without formaldehyde in it. Her hair is SUPER healthy. BUT it's very very expensive.

Personally I wouldn't try it right before your wedding. If you end up not liking it or if your hair is damaged or grows in weirdly after, you might be stuck with it in your wedding day.

I wake up at 5:45am and leave my house with wet hair not good with winter coming. Think this might be a good idea. I'm looking at Groupons a little Christmas gift for myself but like some mentioned afraid it might damage my hair right before the wedding. I'll probably wait and do it before our honeymoon.

@Mactobe - I think Japanese straightening is worse when growing out, I don't think Keratin is as bad. I'll call my hair styles to ask.

@Elizabeth good idea without the formaldehyde but I don't think any of those are on Groupon. Very expensive indeed especially where I live.

I have naturally frizzy hair, not curly, just wavy and frizzy. I did the keratin treatment 3 weeks before my wedding, and it was the best decision I made! I got married on the ocean, and I didn't have one strand of hair frizzy or out of place all night, it was impervious to humidity! It definitely was a miracle! that was August 2014, and I got another one in June 2015. So it's been 5 months since I got it last, and my hair did grow out but it is not awkward looking at all, it just make my hair fuller against my head as opposed to flat, so I actually really like it better after it has grown out some. BUT, if you want it *naturally* curly for your wedding, don't do the treatment because mine lasts about 8 months before the treatment fully wears off the full length of the hair. You CAN still curl it, which is actually what I did for my wedding, it is just WAY neater and shinier. COST: my first treatment was in an expensive city, it cost $400 not including tip! My second one was in a cheaper town and it cost $150! And it is the EXACT same treatment, lasting the same amount of time. I will never overpay for that again!

Because they're so damn expensive, for awhile I was going from salon to salon w/ various Groupons/other deals. A couple of tips if you're using Groupon:

-Ask about hidden fees before purchasing. Often salons charge extra for particularly long hair. Once a salon DOUBLED the cost of the Groupon and told me halfway through the treatment.

-I found that a lot of the places that do these specials can be somewhat careless or (in the baove case) totally slimy. Definitely read reviews. They can really vary in quality.

-Make sure your stylist washes your hair MULTIPLE times (it needs to be seriously clean when applying the keratin). Also make sure they explain to you aftercare. With some treatments you can wash your hair in 24 hours, others require 72 hours. And FYI you'll need sulfate and sodium free shampoo and conditioner to maintain the treatment. The first time I got a treatment done the stylist didn't tell me about aftercare and I stupidly used normal shampoo--great way to throw $ down the drain.

-A lot of deals offer a cut/keratin combo. Honestly I'd avoid those. They often cut the hair while dry after applying the keratin and I've only ever had really awful cuts that way.

I have really curly hair , I have had 3 or 4 keratin treatments. I was getting them every 3-4 months and it really helped me comb faster , but that was pretty much my only benefit. I don' think its damaging I really actually liked them. I was only getting them because my stylist had her own studio so I could get them for less than 150 but now in my area they are regularly about 270$$ sorry no thanks. Have you tried using a diffuser? That is really good for curly hair and better than having wet hair in the morning. My only con is the price but I didn't see that huge of a difference to pay 300$$ !

I have thin, frizz, wavy hair that just has a mind of its own. I do not want to manage a Kertine treatment, instead I get smoothing treatments every 4 months or so. It is an ALL Natural product using agava. This way my hair retains is wavy, beachy, just out of bed style, but is not frizzy and all over the place.

I live in FL, where humidity is not your friend. And I love this treatment. http://www.agaveoil.com/smoothing_treatment

I recently did the express keratin treatment, and liked it somewhat. I like having some body to my hair, and although I have a lot of thick, frizzy, full hair, it did make it almost too thin for me. I don't think I would do it again, but I do hear that it is great for some people! So my advice, maybe try the express one first? It lasts about 2-3 weeks.

I'd recommend something like Chi Smoothing treatment or Kenra has a great one too. Keratin is a protein for your hair, so really it's just a deep conditioner on steroids. Helping smooth, and defrizz, relaxing curl up to 75% normally... if the service is done right and u use the right products that are sold with the treatment it can last 4-6 months. I worked at jcpenney salon and the Chi started at $300, takes about 2-3 hours to do. Stylist HAS to be certified by Chi there. They might have changed prices in the last two years though.. good luck !

I have curly hair too, and I've always wanted to try one. My hair is fairly fine though, so I worried about damage. Now I only wash my hair 2x a week and my hair is a million times healthier (a habit I started when I bleached my hair once a month - incredibly not healthily). I blow dry with a diffuser and get it 80%ish dry and its dry by the time I have to leave for work.

My sisters best friend had super thick, curly, white blond hair and got them done 3 times a year for over 10 years. Totally fine.

I agree with the others who say that maybe this close to the wedding is cutting it a bit close, so maybe something to do after the wedding?(as opposed to a post-wedding cut?).

I think it depends on what you're looking to get out of it. I have curly hair and the keratin treatment I got stretched out my curls to more of a wave, but it was still frizzy. I didn't like it at all and couldn't wait for it to go back to normal. I would definitely wait until after the wedding. Everyone's hair reacts to keratin differently and it took a little longer than a few months for mine to go back to normal.
