NWR: How to Deal with a Difficult Landlord

MrsRidley, on February 4, 2017 at 1:38 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 7

A little while back I posted about how my Landlord was trying to evict my FH and I. Long story short, he was retaliating because I called License & Inspections (L&I) to report that we did not have heat in our rental for the whole month of November. He verbally stated that he would waive our rent for December due to the issue. We continued to pay rent like we normally would. Fast forward to January 22nd..We got an eviction letter. We have documentation that the Landlord provided to the Better Business Bureau (BBB) explaining the issue after my complaint. In THAT letter, he stated that our account was being credited for the month of December. We went to the Fair Housing Commission to fight the eviction, now we have a court date set for February 22nd. Our lease is terminated and we are just fighting the eviction now, but how do we rent if our Landlord is a fucking asshole? I know other places will call for a reference, but I know those pricks are going to lie on how we were as tenants.

Who knows? He may have a change of heart and might not lie to a perspective landlord. I am just trying to prepare for the best. Is there any advice on how I should handle the situation if my application is denied because of his lies? I have all my documentation as proof, and I know a ruling in my favor will show this, but I know that once you hear something about someone you might be renting to, it strongly turns you away (regardless if it’s true or not).

I really want to get out of this place, but I feel like he is going to make this process hard as hell.

I would suggest you call an attorney. Most states have legal aid offices that can assist.

YCCMD, I most certainly will. I am just really concerned about the slander making it extremely hard to rent. I will look up some places to call on Monday morning.

What state are you in? I've rented all over PA and then NY and not once did the new rental companies call old ones. They do a background check for criminal records, credit check, and ask for references but I never had to tell people where I used to live or have them call. I've lived in 8 apartments since on my own. You could be worrying about nothing on the references issue.

Bee- I am in Philadelphia, Pa. Only reason why I say is because of previous experience. When I was in college, I rented from a company & my neighbor verbally harassed my roommate and I by calling us all types of racial slurs and much more. We complained to our real estate company, who basically told us that we were students renting in a business facility and we should be more respective of our neighbor. She never once took our complaints seriously. Her husband (the owner) took our complaints very serious and convinced the neighbor to move. The wife was very difficult to deal with, so we always handled things through the husband. Anyway, when I graduated & tried to find a place in Philadelphia, one of my applications was denied because they called for a reference and she was there. She blatantly lied. Flat out. I tried to explain my case to the potential landlord but he completely rejected our application. This is the reason I am scared the same thing would happen.

Law schools near you may have a Housing Clinic. Ours did. They can give you great advice for free about how to handle this.
