NWR: Frizzy hair everywhere! What am I doing wrong and/or what can I do?

WeDoInJune, on March 3, 2017 at 9:26 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 19

Hello! In preparation for my wedding I'm trying to do everything I can to have healthy hair. My hair is naturally wavy and is frizzy all over. I have been taking the hair, skin, and nails pills for a few months, only shampoo 2-3 times a week with a sulfate-free shampoo that says it helps tame the frizz. I also always use a leave-in conditioner. I have not dyed my hair, nor used heat to style it. I even shower in the coldest temp. I can stand. I also use an OGX coconut oil and milk with egg white serum. After all this I still have frizzy hair that I hate. What am I doing wrong!? Or is it just genetics and I'm stuck with it?

Wow... are you trying to go straight? If so consider a keratin treatment. If not, use a smoothing agent rather than a leave in conditioner. Good luck frizzy hair sucks big time. I've dealt with b it my entire life... you either use a significant amount of gel for the curls or smoothing agents..

Most of frizz control comes down to styling products for me. If you're using sulfate-free shampoo, make sure your products do not contain silicones.

I like the DevaCurl products, particularly the mousse and the styling cream. I also like Ouidad Wave Create spray. Jessicurl products are great, too.

I find I get the best frizz protection from layering products, like using a styling cream and then a mousse. It takes some trial and error to find the best combos.

How do you style and dry your hair? You want to mess with it as little as possible to prevent frizz. And I'm sure you know not to brush your hair once it's dry.

Check out naturallycurly.com. There is so much advice there, even forums specifically for those with wavy hair.

I don't mind my waves, the bulk of my very thick hair waves nicely, however the rest of my hair frizzes out and leaves me frustrated. I did buy a keratin conditioner, but haven't tried it yet.

I air dry my hair and don't wrap the towel too tight. I mostly throw the towel on top of my head and let it hang. I only comb my hair with a wide-toothed comb after my shower. Other than that I leave it be.

@LeahH I "wash" my hair every day by rinsing it in the shower but I only use shampoo a few times a week. I always use conditioner though.

I have found my frizz to be better by shampooing my my roots only and then conditioning mid-shaft to ends only.

I wash my hair 1-2 times a week with shampoo and rinse with water in between + dry shampoo as needed. 1-2 a month I will just shampoo all of my hair to get rid of oil build up on the ends.

I also do a 2-strand to a 3-strand braid for my hair afterwards to dry. It seems to help!

I love DevaCurl. I import the stuff to Europe - which is a huge pain, but totally worth it. You should check the DevaChan website and see if they have any certified stylists near you. I have REALLY curly hair, and the only people I've ever had good luck with styling it were the DevaChan stylists (I went to their salon in NYC when I lived there) - I used to keep it in a really cute, short, curly bob. But when I moved overseas I had to go back to ponytail or blowdry straight.

When I go straight, I really love argan oil. Josie Marin makes a good formula for hair, but I also use 100% argan as well. Also pricey, but totally worth it.

Deva Curl is awesome, I agree with PP's.

I also do a Moroccan oil hair mask every 2 weeks on mine. Another thing to consider... are you getting regular trims? My hair stylist said that if you skip trims that breakage can travel up -- leading to a lot of flyaways/frizz.

I have extremely curly hair. I only use shampoo maybe once a month because any more than that dries it out. I use a couple of different conditioners - Garnier Sleek and Shine works well. Also once a week, I massage my scalp with coconut oil and finger comb it through my hair root to tip, then let it sit for 30 minutes before getting in the shower. You may also want to limit the amount of time your hair is under hot water. I try to rinse with warm or cold.

I also have wavy, naturally frizzy hair. I get express keratin treatments at the salon - they last me about 8 weeks, and they tame the frizz without removing all the wave (although it does make it a little straighter). You have to use sulfate and chloride free shampoo for it to last. I also sleep on a silk (NOT satin - that just made my hair and face oily) pillowcase.

I also like Living Proof styling cream.

I would suggest to use a cotton t shirt to dry your hair instead of a towel. It doesn't pull at the hair like a towel does so it doesn't cause as much friction (and then frizz) as a towel. I agree with PPs to start co-washing and shampooing less frequently. And maybe once or twice a month use a deep conditioner for 20-30 min. You might also want to try sleeping on a satin pillowcase to reduce friction at night.

Use a T-shirt or microfiber towel to dry your hair, the roughness of a terry-cloth towel creates friz. Read the product ingredients carefully, a lot of companies will put "silicone free" on shampoo or "sulfate free" on conditioner as a marketing gimmic - but really there isnt usually silicone in schampoo or sulfate in conditioner anyway. Make sure the shampoo is sulfate free and any other products you use are silicone free - especially conditioner. Also only shampoo your roots when you (only once a week) wash your hair, and condition daily (the rest of your hair besides roots)

I second finding a Deva-certified stylist if you can. A good haircut makes a big difference.

I use argon oil on my hair once it's dry. A tiny bit goes a long way and it helps smooth frizz without looking too oily!

I have made the mistake of using too much though. Seriously, a little goes a long way!

If you're ok with having straight hair instead of wavy hair, do a Brazilian Blowout. I've been getting them for 6 years and they have changed my life.
