Nwr: Financial Peace University

EmAbrams, on July 11, 2019 at 12:19 PM Posted in Community Conversations 1 12

FH and I decided a few weeks ago to start our marriage out on the right foot and we joined the Dave Ramsey Program Financial Peace University. Truth be told, I went through the course about 5 years ago but I did it alone and the concepts didn't stick. This time I have the support of a loving man and we are planning to be debt free in approximately 18-20 months!!

Has anyone else gone through the program? I know some of his concepts are harsh and hard to swallow; but I am really amped up and feel like we can totally do it! We are still living separately until after the wedding so we aren't able to come up with a budget exactly but we can at least get an idea of what we are looking at and officially start after the wedding! We are only 50 days out and I can not wait to start my new life!

We haven't personally, but I think it's an awesome thing to do together. I've seen a ton of posts about couples having financial problems (not so much not having money, but disagreeing on debt & how to save/spend). I think that's why my fiance and I work so well together, we have really similar views. Buying a house together prior to being married was good (in our situation) too because you basically lay all our debt, income, savings out for them to see and discuss what you can afford, etc. Congratulations, great decision!

We, luckily, have not needed to go through a program like this. However, one of my close friends and her husband are going trough it right now and it seems great! I know a lot of people who have been helped by Dave Ramsey and I think his program really is effective from what I have witnessed.

It definitely helps to be on the same page! I have been in relationships where we had completely opposite money views and it totally sucks! It is awesome that you and your fiancé work well together, super important.

Thankfully our debt is not out of control like others I have seen. We are an older couple who have had many, many years to wrack up our own debts lol. It is awesome you don't need it! Stay on top of that so you don't need it in the future! Smiley winking

This is a step I took on my own before I met my FH. It wasn't easy, but I am very humbled to know I don't have the "debt baggage" when see my future. My FH does have debt, but on his own will has asked my thoughts/opinions/support on him paying off his debt prior to the wedding.. it meant shuffling some money and cashing in some stocks for him, but it was his idea and he wanted to start our marriage off debt free (aside from our houses). I supported him either way, but it meant a lot that he was thinking about our future! Good luck to you both!!

Yes. I have gone through some of it. I did it because I didn't know much about wealth accumulation and mortgages. I think there is a general misunderstanding that it's primarily for getting out of debt. I think it's more about financial education. Some people are fortunate enough to have received this from parents or school etc but I knew just the bare minimum bank accounts and CDs. I learned a lot about how to save in ways beyound a savings account. I think it's a good program if you don't have a lot of knowledge about finances even if you aren't in debt.

We did it as well! My dad actually asked us to go through some sort of financial budgeting course before we got engaged because we are both spenders haha. We did a mock budget but I agree that it’ll be much easier once we actually live together and have a joint account!

We are planning to go through this together! We're both pretty good with money and we never carry a balance on our credit cards (I know credit cards are a big no-no for Dace Ramsey, but that is a piece we will not be following). We only have debt from our mortgage and my graduate student loans, but we would like to ramp up our budgeting/saving as we plan to have kids in the next couple of years and would like to as prepared for that as possible (from a financial perspective). Are you doing the group class or the online program?

We are in a group. I think it really adds to the experience when you get together and get to discuss things openly with people who are in the same mind set as you. Yes Dave Ramsey is a definite "anti-credit card" person and we will probably keep one for emergencies but get rid of the rest.

I think that makes a lot of sense! Maybe we'll try to find a group that works with our schedules instead of doing it on our own time. We put everything on credit cards that we can (we have rewards cards so the points gained pay for flights/hotels/vacations) and just pay it off at the end of the month. We personally find it easier to budget when it is all in one place, but I know that system doesn't work for everyone. I'm sure we won't follow the rest of the plan 100%, but that is one thing we already know we won't be doing lol.

My fiance and I did the program before we were engaged. I would highly recommend taking the course! It provides a neutral and nonjudgmental environment to talk about expenses and learn about difficult topics.

We did this through our church! great idea. We are 22 and will be completely out of debt by the end of next year and homeowners by 24-25 because of what we learned there. Smiley smile
