NWR - college

Brittaney, on April 27, 2015 at 8:28 PM Posted in Planning 0 19

I was supposed to start college again this summer to continue my education because I recently took a semester off to decide what I wanted to major in. The college I was wanting to go to and was looking at just closed down all their schools. :/ The second school I was considering may be next to close their doors. Unfortunately I have to start looking for another school that I would like to go to that won't cost me an arm and a leg.

Is it Everest that you were looking into going?

Yeah. My dad and sister went there and they said they loved it. My mom went there as well.

Sorry to hear that Smiley sad I just saw that about Corinthians colleges closing down all campuses. Be very very careful with these for profit schools!

My sister was going to Everest she was frantic this morning. I feel so bad for everyone. At least you dodged a bullet. Start looking into other schools and do your research before enrolling. I am always weary of for-profit schools because they are so expensive. Apparently Everest and other schools that fall under Corinthian colleges have been under investigation since last year for falsifying job placement data. They were paying off temp agencies to place students into temporary positions upon graduating and they were counting students that already had jobs before they enrolled as Everest placed students to try to jack up their rates.

Look for a real school. Those for profits are not well-regarded.

@Buttons I will. I'm just unsure of what school to go to now. I wanted to do something online that way I can visit FH in Hawaii and be able to still work here.

I'm not sure what you're looking at going to school for, but you may want to look into how those colleges are regarded in your future profession rather than just at price. Also, maybe look into financial aid. Sometimes more expensive schools will offer additional aid and actually be cheaper than a school with lower tuition. Also, not sure what degree you're looking at, but some 4 year schools offer partnerships with community colleges, so you could potentially go to community college for 2 years, get your AA, and then transfer the credits and get a bachelor's for just the additional 2 years at a 4 year college.

@Kimberly I'm glad I dodged a bullet. Everest literally just scheduled an appointment a few days ago for me to go visit one of the campuses. I'm sorry that your sister went through that. Now I'm just unsure of where to go.

@Kahlcara I was initially going to a community college even though I got accepted into a four year but I didn't go this semester and I wasn't to fond of the school I was going to. I want to go for communications and eventually be a school counselor.

Just jumping in, as someone who has a BA and an MA in Comm and currently teaches undergrads in the Communication Studies department at a state school....if you want to be a school counselor, I'm not sure Comm is the right major. I'd look into elementary ed or psych. Also, look at county colleges. They're a great value!

Yeah, I think you generally need a master's in social work or psych and an accreditation to be a school counselor. I googled CA requirements and found this. http://www.schoolcounselor-ca.org/content.asp?contentid=75

So I would make sure wherever you are getting your bachelor's from (whether you go straight to a 4 year school or do community college and then another 2 years) is regionally accredited so that you're eligible for a master's program if that's what you want to do.

You do need a masters to be a counselor. I did my undergrad in Family and Child Sciences, and the next step could have been school counseling. Not to knock my undergrad, but my major was super easy and fun!

Thank you to those who said what I was going to major in wasn't right. I looked online and some counselors had communication degrees and became a counselor. Maybe that's not a main one they need. @KM what is the job that you do?

@KM that's awesome. I was thinking of doing something with sports before because I love them but I thought of going a different way so that's why I made up my mind of being a counselor. Thank you for the information about what degree I will need Smiley smile Hope your job is doing well.

Would totally recommend against for profit colleges. I did my first semester at undergrad at one of Laureate International's schools, and while I had a blast, that one semester is going to cost me more than the rest of my degree combined. I then went to a community college to rack up some credits while saving money, which I wasn't too fond of, but finished 40 credits for less than 2000. Transferred to a four year university in a small town which I love-- the people are so kind-- and will be graduating in 11 days! Community college might be worth toughing out for the money you'll save. Wishing you luck!

It may be that some people with Communications degrees go back and get a Master's degree in something else to be a school counselor. I would think that psychology or some sort of family studies/education would be a better route to go. Plenty of schools have online programs, even look at state schools near you, etc.
