NWR - can someone find your address from Facebook messenger?

FutureMrsAF, on February 10, 2017 at 6:33 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 12

So I got a friend request from someone earlier that I did not know, since getting engaged I have had a few requests from FH's friends (FH doesn't have Facebook so I don't know if we are mutual friends) so I just started asking people how I know them. I asked this guy, and he started asking where I live and how he doesn't know me but is excited to meet me very soon and be very close friends. I'm scared.

I blocked him, called the police non emergency line to report it but I am concerned that he was able to find my address through Facebook. I don't know if this is possible?

If anyone has had this happen please let me know. Or if anyone knows what Facebook actually shares that is helpful as well. Thank you!

I've never been able to find someone exact address off of Facebook. Only if they share city and state on their page is something can see. Go into your privacy settings and put everything to where only friends can see it and in messenger to where only friends can send messages; others will go into your request box.

Messenger won't share your address. In today's world, it is a good idea to limit the amount of personal info on FB/social media anyway, so if your actual address/phone number/email/anything else is on FB, delete it. Don't accept friend requests from people you don't know. It sucks, but you can't be too careful out there.

    No.

Just a block would have sufficed.

I don't accept friend requests from people I don't know. If you have to ask how do they know you, then you don't need to be FB friends with them.

Unless you put your address on FB, it's not possible. I used to get lots of random men saying things like that on FB (particularly in broken English from Dubai and such). I would recommend that you switch your privacy settings so only "friends of friends" can contact you. That's what I did and I haven't had problems since.

@ogalecia - profile is very private now, I had it set before to friends of friends, and I changed it now to "just friends". I live in Nebraska, in a rental. I'm hoping it'll be fine, I don't know why someone would ask where I live multiple times if they already knew. Will take this as a sign that I should just keep things super private because now I'm scared someone is going to break in or god knows what. Ugh.

I know that Facebook used to share location information, I am pretty sure my location services were off but I just verified that they are off now. I don't know exactly how close it pinpoints where you are. Like, exact address or general area..

@lyla - yes, it was fairly broken English, and the account has only been opened since January 30th.

Also report it the profile on FB let them know so they can hopefully shut the profile down.

You can do a google search on yourself see what comes up. Depending on how public your profile was will determine what info this person got.

People absolutely can find information about people online, some more easily than others. My FH is a private investigator and it just takes a google search to dig up current and past addresses sometimes. FB messenger of course doesn't give your address, though.

Also, you should look through your pictures and see if there was anything identifying in them--i.e. a selfie in front of your house with your car in the driveway (tags are a great way to look people up).

@dena - luckily we live in an apt right now and I don't think I have any photos taken out front. Though we are buying a house this year and I will remember that for future reference!! Very good advice.

One other thing I would suggest is making sure all your settings on your pictures are set to not give GPS. FH works for the courts and said that some sites like facebook, twitter and instagram will embed location info into the picture so you can "tag" yourself some where. If you take photos from your house and then upload them, I guess it's easy to check the location the picture was taken. I guess private investigators have used the info in court for some cases. I'm not sure how much I believe but I wouldn't put it past a smart phone

@brittany, double checked that and it's off. It seems like iPhone automatically sets those things to "on" unless you disable them. Seems weird to me. I don't know how many people really want that information to be accessible especially by strangers.
