Number of hors d'oeuvres per person?

BeachBride, on February 25, 2016 at 7:36 AM Posted in Planning 0 15

For a cocktail hour between the ceremony and reception how many hors d'oeuvres should you have per person? We are also doing a cheese/fruit display as well. Any advice? I've seen anywhere from 2-4 to 5 and up.

We're doing 3-4 per person as our cocktail hour will only be roughly 45 minutes before dinner.

I think it completely depends on how long you're serving them, and when you're serving them.

This is something that your cater should be about to tell you. I think it also depends on how many types of hors d'oeuvres you have. Some people many try all, while others have multiples of one type. I would definitely have more of the more popular ones.

Defiantly talk to your caterer. They would know. I have no idea what they are planning on how many per person. I have 4 stationed (one is a massive cheese and veggie station) and then 6 passed. My venue is a catering company so they do this a lot so I'm trusting them. My only concern was them getting the passed ones over to me while I'm taking pictures! They promised me they would lol. I would be really upset if I didn't get to eat the yummy ones I decided on. Especially the fried polenta squares! God I'm getting hungry just thinking about the wedding lol

We have just under 5 pp. Once we have a better idea of RSVPs, we'll refine that number.

This totally depends on your caterer. Our package gives us 1 displayed option and 1 passed option and they make it 2 pp for each.

Depends on the time of day and what will follow. I would say 6-7 with a station or two.

And don't 'defiantly' talk to your caterer; be nice and definitely talk to them! (Sorry, I couldn't resist...)

@Bill, for a cocktail reception I've read 12-15 pp. Sound right to you?

I was told 5 per person, for 45 minutes. This was by someone who's retired, from the banquet industry, so didn't have any financial interest, in our wedding. I don't know if the fruit/cheese display would count as 1 or 2.

We did a fruit/cheese display for 80, and there was a lot left over. We ended up with 95 guests. We also had 6 passed hors d'oeuvres at 100 each. The cocktail hour was a full hour. Everything was a la carte, so we had to pay per piece.

Some venues might supply an unlimited amount, of each hors d'oeuvres choice; then, I think you could get away with less. I attended a wedding where there were only 3 different types and my family was only offered one. My guess is that they cooked 1 per person, and people before us took more than one each.

Your caterer should be able to help you with that. My venue provides the catering and the coordinator there told me they will be able to tell me how many apps I need to order when the the time comes.

We are doing a full dinner afterwards. I would be worried that my caterer is going to tell me a higher number than needed to make more money but I will definitely ask. Thanks!

We are likely doing 6 passed hors d'ouevres per person, plus a fruit/cheese/cracker display.
