not your typical father daughter dance

demetra, on May 11, 2014 at 12:10 AM Posted in Planning 0 11

Hi Everyone....this is my first post so I want to start out by saying hello Smiley smile I'm looking for a song to dance to with my dad but not anything slow...he doesn't like to dance so I think we should do something a little more fun..something a little more upbeat like My Girl (The temptations) and he LOVES oldies....any suggestions?

My dad is a big fan of the oldies too...the only wedding related task he was given was to pick our song...he mentioned Earth Angle (I think its by the Penguins?), but he still has plenty of time to decide

You're lucky! My dad wants a slow instrumental with no words. :/

To be honest, I don't think he wants to do it at all...I think he feels like he has to so I'm trying to make it a little more fun for him

Forever Young is a great one! My dad and I are dancing to a slow one but there are more upbeat ones.

    Demetra-

I get shy or non-dancing dads & moms occasionally. Here's what I do:

-Find them a song that they like (you are well on your way!).

-Tell them it can be as long or as short as they'd like- just to bear with it for a few pix. Surprisingly many "shy" parents end up dancing for the entire song and don't even realize it. The wedding I had this past Saturday, the groom thought we'd have to cut the song but she danced the entire song with him and loved every moment.

-A great way to take the spotlight off of him/her is to start the dance with him/her and then have the DJ invite all the other Fathers & Daughters (Moms/Sons) up. All of a sudden the focus is off you two and you have given the other dads & daughters a moment that they won't soon forget. They will love you for including them. If you don't have many D&D's or M&S's in the audience you can just invite everyone up.

-Finally if he/she is still apprehensive, have your DJ start the song, you can twirl or just stand there for a moment or three, and the DJ can fade out. You have your moment, albeit a condensed version.

Oh another idea is have your new FIL or a stepdad or grandfather step in, taking the spotlight and pressure from the shy/non-dancer.

Lots of possibilities! When you plan out everything with your DJ, talk it over with him/her. That's what we are here for!

    Good luck and Congrats!

I have always loved Father & Daughter by Paul Simon. My father played me that song while I was still a teenager and told me that this is the song he wants as our father/daughter song.

Other options: Somewhere over the rainbow by Israel Kamakawiwoʻole or The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy) by Simon & Garfunkel (only 2 minutes, so nice and short)

Or just choose a song you both like, especially if you associate it with your dad! The song doesn't have to have a message, as long as you both love it. Do you remember him singing or dancing around to an old song? Choose that one. You'll both love it even more.

The best dances are always PERSONAL.

As for him being uncomfortable, the song doesn't have to be just the two of you for the entire song. BUT, if the groom & his mom will come out after you, adding guests to the dance floor doesn't work, since you'll have to kick them off again.

    Here are some ideas:
