Not telling Bakery cake is for wedding

ngraham21, on February 3, 2020 at 7:38 AM Posted in Planning 0 15
Hi guys,

I am getting married May 23,2020. I am in the process of looking for a bakery to do my wedding cake. I noticed one bakery has a pricing list for a 3 tier cake to feed 100 people (perfect) at 85 dollars. This includes just basic flavors and Italian buttercream with simple designs which is fine with me. However if I go to the wedding section of the bakery it says pricing starts at 3.25 a slice. The only difference I can tell is the wedding Cake includes a tasting and a 1 year anniversary cake, which I don’t need. Do you think it’s okay to not mention this cake is for a wedding and pay the 85 dollars rather than the 325? I am confused why there is such a difference in price to begin with

You can try it, but if you plan to have the cake delivered, they're definitely going to know it's a wedding.

Bakeries in my area only deliver if it’s for a wedding. If it’s not, it would have to be picked up. Is this something you could logistically for?

To save 250 dollars I will be willing to drive it the 5 minutes to the wedding! We have an SUV so shouldn’t be too bad to drive

Ugh the wedding industry. Even when I was calling restaurants for catering quotes they all gauged prices when I mentioned the word wedding.

There are a couple reasons they might charge more for a wedding cake. Like another poster said, it could be that it includes a delivery fee. Could also include the "cake slicing fee". Yup, that's another ridiculous thing - paying for someone to slice your cake. Maybe they provide a person to do that?
Otherwise I have no idea- that's a crazy price discrepancy.

If you could pick the cake up and take it to your venue yourself, then I definitely would not mention it is for a wedding! If they ask (and they probably will) just say it is for a 50th birthday or an anniversary party or something. That is ridiculous they charge more depending on what type of event it’s for!

Anything with the word "wedding" automatically is upcharged. God forbid the industry profits less than a few million a year 😒

Obviously you can't ask without giving yourself away, but I would guess that the price discrepancy is due to something like delivery and slicing. If you know someone who can handle the slicing (or if your venue does it) and you feel confident in transporting the cake, I would just plan to pick it up. However, transporting a three tier cake can be difficult. Just be prepared for accidents, leaning, etc.

And this is exactly why we aren’t doing a cake. Crazy!

I agree with Veronica. As long as you’re prepared for delivering it yourself then go for it. I will say, the nice thing about delivery is they have to fix it if anything happens in transportation. If you are going to do it yourself, I’d set up some boards etc so the cake doesn’t shift around while you’re driving. Transporting and carrying a 3-tier is not easy and a lot of bakeries upcharge because of the pressures brides put on them for it to be perfect

Here is one thing I have noticed which makes no sense. There is a wedding way to cut a cake. I personally feel it is a cake decorators way to charge more money. When you purchase a for any other event it is just regular slicing but basically when you cut a cake wedding style it is a way to get more slices out of a smaller piece of cake. I would honestly call the bakery and ask why is the pricing so different lol. I would agree with the others, as long as it is not you going horribly out of your way to bring the cake to the venue then I would just say otherwise. A co worker of mine is getting married and her cake is from Sam's Club and she said a three tier is $70.

I wouldn't say a darn thing. It's none of their business what it's for. Absolutely ridiculous that it's so upcharged.

My friend is doing the same thing. She’s ordering a cake and they don’t need to know it’s a wedding cake. Because it’s a wedding they up charge so much.
