Not sure if i should invite someone to be a bridesmaid

Allie, on August 31, 2021 at 12:22 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 1 9

I've read a lot of advice on these forums and figured I would ask for advice on my own situation!

I have a friend, Friend A, that I lived with 2 years ago. Friend A, Friend B, and Friend C were all friends in college, and I knew of them, but I wouldn't say we were close friends in college. Friend A moved to another city after a year of us living together. I moved in with Friend B and Friend C, and we became close (especially because we lived together through covid).

Friend B and Friend C have since moved away as well, but they still come back to our hometown to see their families so I see them more frequently. Friend A recently came back to visit during the summer, and all 4 of us hung out together, but I just didn't feel as close to Friend A as I used to.

I want to ask Friend B and Friend C to be my bridesmaids, but I don't know if Friend A will feel left out. I'm definitely closer to Friend B and Friend C, and I wouldn't have asked Friend A if we didn't have these mutual ties. I kind of feel like if I do ask her, it'll be out of obligation and to avoid an uncomfortable conversation. She wouldn't be a bad bridesmaid, and it's not that I dislike her, I just don't know if it's worth it to ask because I feel bad and don't want to explain to her why she wasn't a bridesmaid.

Also, she's not engaged yet, but I don't think I would be her bridesmaid. I don't know if any of us would be her bridesmaids because she has really close friends from high school and her current city.

So, should I ask Friend A to be a bridesmaid?

No, never ask out of obligation. It only seems to lead to regrets and problems down the road.

It sounds like you don't care to have her as a bridesmaid, I would just leave her out. It seems like you aren't as close to her anymore

Never ask anyone to do anything out of obligation, including attending as a guest. If they are not your current innermost social circle that you rely on first before anyone else, then don’t ask them to be involved in any way.

I agree with previous posters, if you ask out of obligation you are bound to have a miserable time.

If you're not sure if someone should be a bridesmaid that usually means they shouldn't. You know who you want standing up there with and didn't have to question those choices for a reason.

You're not getting married until 2023. I would very much advise not even thinking about wedding party until about 9-12 months prior to the wedding. Definitely don't ask anyone this early. If you wonder why scroll through the posts here about people regretting their choices.

Yes, agreed! Definitely not asking anyone yet, but I've known who I wanted as my bridesmaids for a while and have only been undecided on this one person. I still have time to think about it and if we get closer in the next 6 months, maybe it'll be an easier decision. But for now, just wanted to hear some outside opinions!

Thank you to everyone for your responses - feel like I already knew the answer deep down, but good to have a sounding board!

If you’re already questioning it, then you have your answer right there. Never invite out of obligation, you only want your nearest and dearest with you. If she asks just be honest and say you feel closer to friends B and C and see them more often. You don’t want to regret asking someone and have them in all your photos.

If you're questioning it, saying it'd be out of obligation and you're not as close, then there's your answer.
